The only living member of the Class of1889, my 90th birthday on April 29 wasspent in Kittery Point, Me., at the home ofmy relative Joseph William Pepperrel Frost, who owns and, with his wife Rebecca andtwo young daughters, lives in the PepperrellMansion built "in 1682 by Colonel WilliamPepperrell, from whom we both are descendants. It was here that Colonel Pepperrell'sson, Sir William of Louisburg fame, wasborn, lived and died. The mansion is completely restored and today is one of the oldest and most beautiful of the historic colonialhouses in the country.
Early forenoon of my birthday we motoredto the adjoining town of Eliot, formerly apart of Kittery, where we visited the oldBartlett hand-hewn, oak-timbered, two-storyhouse with slated roof, still in excellentcondition, which was built in 1740 by mygreat-great-great-grandfather, Captain Nathan Bartlett. Here five generations of theBartlett family, including my father, wereborn and reared. While there we visited thegraveyard where my father and mother lieburied. We then went to the adjacent two-story house with slated roof where I wasborn, and what a host of memories of thehappy days spent there during my youthcrowded my thoughts. Returning to thePepperrell Mansion a dinner of lobsterstaken that morning by a local fishermanfrom his traps at the Isles of Shoals broughtto an end a wonderful happy 90th birthday.
