Somehow we didn't get the welcome mat out last month for William Johnson '53, of the Lebanon law firm of Cotton, Tesreau & Stebbins, who's joined us as an instructor of law. Belatedly, but nonetheless sincerely: Welcome.

Just off the presses is Tuck Bulletin 22. "Evaluating Research and Development," by Mr. Quinn. If you haven't yours yet, you'll have it soon.

(And, on the subject of Tuck Bulletins, maybe you saw Henry Hazlitt's review of Number 21, Mr. Piatt's "Economic Indicators," in Newsweek.)

Tuck was the scene last month of the semiannual (fall) meeting of the Connecticut Valley Economists. Professor Eli Shapiro of MIT spoke on the National Commission on Money and Credit, of which he's deputy research director. The College economics department co-sponsored the affair (with Tuck, naturally).

Quite a bit of news about alumni. You've read, of course, that Lane Dwinell T'29 has been appointed an Assistant U. S. Secretary of State. In addition:

Al Brown '24 had his job enlarged recently when Corn Products Company merged the advertising departments of two of its divisions, Corn Products Sales and Best Foods, with Al at the helm. He'd been vicepresident for advertising of Best Foods since 1947....

Chick Pooler '30 has also been given expanded duties, as senior vice-president in charge of international operations at Benton & Bowles.... John Moxon T'30 has been elected president of Carpenter Steel Company, Reading, Pa.... Harry Condon T'31 showed up in a two-column picture in The New York Times, consulting with the research director of the Massachusetts Investors Trust on an industry survey.... BobPrentice T'37 has been promoted to the newly created position of marketing-services director of Lever Brothers....

Bill Bachman T'40 has been promoted to senior vice-president of MacManus, John & Adams.... Roy Rowan T'42 is the new national-affairs editor of "Life." ... Bob Kimball T'48 has been promoted to manager of the National Chain Store Sales Division of the B. F. Goodrich Footwear & Flooring Company. ...Jim Westergaard T'57 has been appointed an associate of Connecticut Mutual Life's Middle Tennessee Agency.

And about T'59's: John Parker is at the Navy Supply School in Georgia.... Larry Hampton is selling for Vick's.... Jon Strong is at Harvard Law.... Glen French is selling for American Hospital Supply and living in Hanover.

Back to Hanover for the Twin State Tennis Championships came Art Hills T'47 and John McCrillis '52. Another competitor therein was Ort Hicks T'22, who, since he lives in Hanover, didn't have to come back. Ort, incidentally, was runner-up in singles and on the winning doubles team in the Hanover Varsity Courts club championship.

About faculty:

Mr. Foster went to Delaware to (1) consult on cost of capital with officers of the Atlas Powder Company, (2) talk on the same subject to the Wilmington chapter of the National Association of Accountants, (3) attend a weekly luncheon of the Delaware Dartmouth Club.... Mr. Burger also spoke to an NAA chapter, in Paterson; his subject: "What's Wrong With Your Writing and How to Fix It." Mr. Burger also wound up another AMA seminar on "How to Write Shorter and Better Reports."

Mr. Lent told members of the American Steel Warehouse Association, at their annual meeting in Manchester, about "The American Economy — 1970 Style." And a Lent article — "The Origin and Survival of Tax-Exempt Securities" - appeared in the National Tax Journal.

Messrs. Morrissey and Schleifer worked with Mr. Taylor of Thayer School during the summer — yes, it's about time we got around to mentioning it — in Mr. T's program for executives on "The Analysis of Spending Decisions." Mr. Morrissey also attended the University of Chicago's August Faculty Seminar on Recent Developments in Business Administration, sponsored by the Ford Foundation and held at Williamstown, Mass.

So what's with you? Let us know.
