William H. Timbers '37 of Darien, Conn., has been nominated by President Eisenhower to be Federal Judge for the U. S. District Court of Connecticut. A member of the New York law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate and Timbers, he served from 1953 to 1956 as General Counsel of the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and was the first Republican ever to fill that post. He was the central figure in a landmark contempt of court decision, in which the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld his refusal to divulge confidential files of an executive agency. After graduating from Dartmouth magna cum laude, Timbers took his law degree at Yale in 1940 and for the next thirteen years practiced law in New York and Connecticut. He is a Republican leader in Darien and has filled many civic posts there.
