A new issue of the directory of Dartmouth Alumni Officers came to our house last week. While thumbing through it, we were quite impressed with the number of '37 men whose names were listed. In addition to your six Class Officers, we find twelve others in our class serving the interests of Dartmouth College in various capacities. If you read last month's issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, you saw pictures of two classmates now serving on the Alumni Council. They were Bill Heroy from Dallas representing District VI, and Jim Humphrey from Great Falls, Mont., a member at large. Jim's name appears twice in this directory, since he also serves as president of the Montana Dartmouth Alumni Association. Then we find Mutt Ray's name listed as an alumni member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. And Charlie Pingree is serving as president of the Boston branch of the Tuck School Clearing House. Then we have eight other classmates holding office in various Alumni Clubs and Associations as follows:
Paul Olson, Secretary, Brattleboro, Vt.; Carl Erdman, President, Reading, Penna.; Warren Crumbine, President, Cleveland, Ohio; Al Reinman, President, Youngstown, Ohio; Bob Woodruff, Secretary, St. Louis, Mo.; Vincent Turecamo, President, Long Island, N. Y.; John Wright, Secretary, Louisville, Ky., Sey Ochsner, President, New Orleans, La.
Seeing Crummy Crumbine's name on thelist above reminds me of a letter from oneof my Cleveland spies who reports that
Warren found an easy solution for a gift to his eight-year-old daughter on her recent birthday. As a member of the Banking Committee out to raise funds for the United Appeal, in the absence of the committee chairman, he was elected to make a progress report at a general meeting of "workers. After his report, the master of ceremonies complimented Warren on his report and made the remark that bankers might not be able to add or subtract, but they sure knew how to multiply. Whereupon he was presented with a pair of rabbits with the admonition to deliver same to the committee chairman. But Warren knew that the chairman, who lives in an apartment, would have no use for the rabbits, so he took them home and presented them to his daughter on her birthday the following day. The little lady was delighted, but to date, Warren has not pressed his wife for an opinion.
Two brief announcements are at hand. The first concerns Brad Petersen, and the formation of a partnership for the general practice of law under the firm name of Erhel & Petersen in Beverly Hills. The second concerns Bill Falion who was recently transferred from Chicago back to New York, and has taken up residence in Wilton, Conn. He has now been appointed manager of the analytical section of the Johns-Manville Analysis Department. While in Chicago, Fal was comptroller of the Dutch Brand Division of J-M.
We are indebted to Don Otis for a delightful letter which we will quote verbatim.
Even though I don't have anything I consider newsworthy, I can bring you up-to-date on the family and dutv here. We arrived here in Philadelphia from 29 Palms, Calif. (Marine Artillery Base) July, '58 and I assumed duties as CO of the Marine Barracks and as District Marine Officer for the Commandant of the 4th Naval District (So. N. J., Delaware, Penn. & Ohio). Duties are mainly the operation and administration of the Barracks involving Base security, Brig, Legal matters, budgets, and numerous parades and appearances amounting to "public relations work for the Marine Corps. As CO, I inhabit an outstanding set of quarters on the Base, the like of which one sees only once in his career. I might add that we have nine bedrooms and the Army-Navy Game is played just two blocks (just outside the main gate) from the quarters so that it is most convenient. We also have parking soace available, but no tickets! If you know anyone who could use a bunk and is going to the game, have them drop me a line and Mona and I will try to nx them up
Mona and I attended the Dartmouth-Princeton game last year. Saw Mutt Ray for a few minutes and several others within hailing distance. We intend to go again this year and have an invitation from a Princeton football great of about 1930 (Bill Hirst, Col., USMCR) to be his guest at the Tiger Inn before and after the game. This shouldn't be construed that we've gone over to the enemy. Beforehand we want to take his hospitality and afterwards collect some of his cash (we have a small wager, naturally).
I was lucky to go to New York last spring (or was it late winter?) to the Touchdown Club dinner in NY for Red Blaik's retirement from the Army. Saw many old footballers, Herb Stearns, Jocko Kennedy, El Camp, our own Dave Camerer, Jack Williams and many others. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening which ended too soon with the return to Philadelphia.
My daughter Nancy (eighteen) is now a freshman at Simmons College in Boston (I'm much more broke now than ever before). Joanne (fourteen) is a freshman in high-school and Anthony (Tony, seven) is tackling the second grade. Mona is her usual busy self with a day devoted to Navy Relief work, another devoted to Grey Lady work at the Naval Hospital here, and the usual "coffees" and bridge groups. After that, I get very excellent recognition. We both enjoy the normal active social life that is inherent in the service on a Naval base.
I haven't vet been able to attend a reunion, but never say die! I'll be in a position some day to make one. We will welcome anyone calling and visiting us who is in the area! By road from the North we are easy to reach, leave the N. J. Turnpike at Exit 3, go over the Walt Whitman Bridge and turn off after the toll gate (25¢) on the ramp marked Broad Street and turn left (south) on Broad to the base. It's fifteen minutes from the turnpike - and no city driving.
