With great joy the class has discovered that 12 of its grandchildren have graduated from Dartmouth and five are now at Dartmouth. This is only the first count and there may be more to add to this list.
Les Leavitt, who spent most of his teaching life at the International College in Lebanon, sends this interesting note about Iran: "My thoughts go back to 1945 when the three half brothers of the late Shah were enrolled as students at our school. This led to many applications from Iranian students, and I went to Teheran to check on prospective students. I also had an audience with the Shah, at that time a very personable young man of 25. The conversation (he speaking in French and I in English and French) was about his experience in a school in Switzerland, where he was rather strictly treated, and his desire was to have his brothers receive the same kind of treatment."
Les gives this reaction to what is happening in the area where his students came from: "You can imagine that we follow the grim news of events which are taking place in several of the Middle East countries. We keep in touch with former friends, teachers, and alumni of International College. The long sad story of the hostages in Iran and the universal joy at their return was especially poignant to us. Unfortunately, the evidence seems to indicate that the United States must share some of the blame for the turmoil still afflicting the country of Iran. Its future? Still very uncertain."
