MARCH 1959 FRED A. SLAUGHTER, PETER B. EVANS, JAMES B. GODFREY

A reasonably reputable antique personality is reputed to have warned "Beware the Ides of March." However, any of us who have been clobbered by this winter's snows and cold weather welcome this first month of spring, with or without the Ides. Equally as welcome to your class scribe as the first flower Of spring is a news-laden memo from Ernie (Jantzen) Moore, to wit: "In early January Angie and I had a delightful evening with Red Gristede and Charlie Schneider at the New York Athletic Club where they exercise (?) every Tuesday night. That same week we sailed for the Bahamas on the "S. S. Nassau." Zorah and Red Gristede, accompanied by their beautiful daughter Amy, came down to the ship to launch us in style. What a pair! Since we were in Nassau at the time of the Annual Boston Dartmouth Banquet, I cannot help you with news re '31ers in attendance. In the January 10 issue of the New Yorker there is an article disclosing that a part of Central Park has been named for Mrs. Charles Gristede, the result of Zoe's having succeeded in getting the Park Commissioner to rid the children's playground, near the 86th Street entrance off Fifth Avenue, of rats (four-legged). Dave Kelley's wife, whose mother lives in Concord, stopped by this past Sunday and brought us up to date on their wonderful family, plus the Johnnie Boermeesters, Ed Langenbachs and Adrian O'Keefes. Have been in touch by phone with Ed Brummer, whose Woodbound Inn is the scene of some wonderful skiing and winter sports this year. We plan on going up with the children for a weekend real soon."

News from the Hanover Plain reveals that Dr. Went Eldredge, professor of Sociology at the College, was scheduled to deliver two lectures to the NATO Defense College in Paris, France. His addresses covered "The Challenge of the 20th Century to the West" and "The West's Response." This is the fifth time he has lectured to this august group of senior military officers, future commanders, and strategists of the Western European Alliance. Red Rolfe, director of Athletics at the College, has been appointed co-chairman of New Hampshire's Spaulding Youth Center. Red will be in charge of organizing the sponsoring committees in the 38 communities which support this wonderful program of helping troubled boys and girls. What a natural assignment for Big Red who, from his days as a Yankee third baseman and ever since, has held the high admiration of young people. The new directorate of The Dartmouth includes Augustus H. Leach Jr. '60, son of Si Leach, as business manager.

From the "Boston Herald's" scoop column comes the report that Adrian O'Keefe's beautiful daughter Judy is the talented young actress who plays luckless Jennie Bailey in "The Doctor and the Devils" at M.I.T.'s Little Theatre.

The earlier insinuation in this column that Beany Thorn had gone underground continues to produce ample rebuttal. Our classmate o£ many parts has assumed authorship of his state insurance association's column for this year. In addition to the myriad civic activities with which he is affiliated, Beany finds time to speak before insurance groups, including a recent talk before the insurance agents of Montgomery and Prince George counties, Maryland. I hereby rescind all implication or innuendo that Beany is slowing down at any distance from 100 yards on out!
