The Dartmouth swimming team under Coach Karl Michael continues to improve as the season rolls along, and won two of three dual meets this past month. The Big Green had an easy time defeating Springfield, 62-24, and Princeton, 66-20, before bowing to league-leading Harvard, 54-32.
Against Sprisngfield two new records were set when Dartmouth's 400-yard medley relay team of Pete Anderson, Scott Piper, Don Baker and Whitey Dunphy blazed home in a time of 4:04.7. Pete Anderson also set a new mark of 2:17.4 in the backstroke, while Charlie Brown won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, Captain Jack Daniels captured the 220-yard freestyle, with Al Hale second, and Glen Gemelli took first in the dive.
The Big Green swimmers won nine of ten events against Princeton, coached by former Dartmouth assistant coach Bob Clotworthy. Another record was set in this meet as Scott Piper swam a 2:04 race in the 200-yard breaststroke. Charlie Brown and Tom Travis placed one-two in the 50-yard event and Captain Jack Daniels captured the 440-yard freestyle.
The tables were turned in the meet with Harvard as the Crimson won eight of ten races. Pete Anderson's win in the backstroke, Captain Jack Daniels' and Al Hale's one-two finish in the 440-yard freestyle race, and Charlie Brown's second places in the 50- and 100-yard events accounted for most of Dartmouth's points.
