The Annual Dinner Meeting of the Monmouth County Dartmouth Club was held on Saturday, February 14, at Shadowbrook Inn. Shrewsbury, N. J. It was attended by approximately seventy members and their wives. The management served an excellent roast beef dinner following cocktails. Our speaker was Dr. Hadley Cantril '28, Board Chairman of International Social Research, Inc. of Princeton. Dr. Cantril is the father of a member of the Class of 1962, and a former Chairman of the Department of Psychology at Princeton University. He spoke on his recent trip to Soviet Russia, where he talked with more than a hundred Soviet psychologists with the aim of gaining insight concerning the progress and attitudes of the Russian people. Following the program all members were invited to remain for showings of "Highlights of Football, 1958" and "Mountain Farm."
Under the chairmanship of George Emery '28, the Club made its third annual bus trip to Princeton for the Dartmouth-Princeton basketball game on February 27. A buffet supper was provided prior to leaving Red Bank, at the Union House. After sufficient food and ample liquid refreshment, about 42 members and wives witnessed the heart-breaking defeat that broke the Big Green's perfect Ivy record. Monmouth County did all it could to supply moral support.
The following officers have been elected to serve until February 1960: President, Oliver B. Conover '53; Vice-President, Harry W. Douty '41; Treasurer, Philip F. Tusting '18.
The Club has been greatly saddened by the sudden death of Robert H. Maida '35. Bob had been active ever since the Club's founding, was a prominent member of the Executive Committee, and had just been elected to the post of Secretary. The entire Jersey Shore has felt his untimely loss.
A cocktail party and Sunday evening supper has been planned for the afternoon of May 24. It will be held in the garden of Dr. Dan Winters '43, everyone to bring his own bottle and the Club providing food and setups. We look forward to a well-attended affair in a pleasant setting.
