The Dartmouth Rugby Club journeyed to California during spring vacation and won three of four contests. The Indian ruggers opened in the Rose Bowl by defeating the Universities Club, 13-0, and then went on to hand the San Diego State College Aztecs an 8-0 defeat. However, against a strong U.C.L.A. team Dartmouth ran out of steam and suffered their only defeat of the year to an American team by a 14-6 score. In the final game the Dartmouth team downed Pomona College, 11-0.
Since that trip the Indians played two early April games and won both, defeating M.I.T., 11-0, and Yale, 6-3.
The Dartmouth Sailing Club got away to an early start by placing second to Princeton at the MacMillan Cup Regatta races. Skip Raymond led the Big Green, with Dave Parker, Sid Goldman, Pete Ryland, Frank Crouse, Bill Truex and Ron Boss as crew. On the same weekend a Dartmouth freshman boat finished sixth at the Medford Octagonal Invitational Regatta.
At the freshman level the Dartmouth squads are just beginning workouts. Freshman baseball coach Eddie Jeremiah reports that 51 candidates answered the call this spring and he rates the squad as "highly promising." The '62 golf squad is composed of Ted Beal, Jack Hubbard, Ted Judson, Kent Graham, Al McCrea and Al Kerr, but Coach Tom Keane is disappointed at the general lack of ability on the squad and does not expect much help from the current team.
Best team of the spring may well be the freshman track squad, made up largely of men who competed during the winter and had a perfect season. Top competitor is, of course, frosh star Tom Laris, who will compete in both the mile and two-mile events.
The freshman lacrosse and tennis teams are unknown quantities at this writing, but neither is expected to be outstanding.
