Dartmouth's pre-eminence in the skiing world, which culminated in 1958 when the Big Green skiers annexed the N.C.A.A. National Championships, may be on the wane. Last winter Dartmouth lost the Winter Carnival and Eastern Championships to Middlebury. This winter things do not look bright.
Not only has graduation removed some top competitors, but at this writing Captain Dave Vorse is on crutches and unable to compete, while Alden Van Buskirk, another top veteran, is out with a protracted illness. Pat Irish, a promising jumper, has left Dartmouth for the winter term, and Pete Ryland, a cross-country runner of ability, has given up skiing to concentrate on studies.
However, Dartmouth, coached by Al Merrill and George Ostler, does have two top-notch four-event men in Art Book-strom and Jim DeLong, and they are backed up by four-event sophomores Dick Nordhaus and John Stowell. Roger Hackley and Mike Wolf are Dartmouth's top Alpine men, while Pete Hawks, Charlie Lund, Skip Bean and sophomores Frank Barker and Bob Bigelow are the Nordic competitors.
