ALMOST a standard feature of the annual May meetings of Dartmouth class officers is a new attendance record, and this year another high mark was set when 198 officers from the Classes of 1894 through 1962 were in Hanover for the weekend of May 1-2. Class chairmen, secretaries, treasurers, Alumni Fund agents, newsletter editors, memorial fund chairmen, bequest chairmen, and reunion chairmen, accompanied by 117 wives, were guests of the College for the two-day program.
The weekend opened with a College Hall reception prior to the annual class officers' dinner in Thayer Hall on Friday evening. Carleton G. Broer '27, president of the Class Secretaries Association, was toastmaster, and speakers were Patrick O. Burns '59, on behalf of the undergraduates, and President Dickey, who devoted his remarks mainly to the faculty proposal that a fourth term, in the summer, be added to Dartmouth academic year.
The annual awards to the top class officers of the year were made at the dinner and went to: Wilbur W. Bullen '22, class chairman; Philip K. Murdock '15, class secretary; Charles H. Jones '23, class treasurer; and Mosher S. Hutchins '17, class newsletter editor. Three class agents similarly honored for their performances in the 1958 Alumni Fund campaign were Edward B. Luitwieler '12, John R. Scotford Jr. '38 and Kevin I. Sullivan '54. Citations read to these seven men at the dinner will be found with their respective class columns in this issue.
Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, presided at a joint meeting of all class officers Saturday morning in the 1902 Room of Baker Library. Prof. Arthur E. Jensen, Dean of the Faculty, spoke about the new "three-three" curriculum, and George H. Colton '35, director of development, gave a progress report on the Capital Gifts Campaign.
Following this general session, the various class officer associations held their separate annual meetings. Presiding over these sessions were: Roscoe A. Hayes '19, chairman of the Class Chairmen and Presidents Association; John D. Dodd '22, president of the Class Agents Association; John S. Fenno '48, president of the Class Treasurers Association; Herbert S. Talbot '25, president of the Newsletter Editors Association; and Ellwood H. Fisher '21, chairman of the Alumni Council Committee on Bequests and Estate Planning. Alfred F. Bremble '56, assistant to the Secretary of the College, conducted a morning meeting of reunion chairmen; and memorial fund chairmen held a luncheon meeting at the Inn.
