The varsity track team, guided by Coach Ellie Noyes, has competed in four dual meets and the Heptagonals to date and has wins over Columbia and Boston University, losses to Brown and Harvard, and sixth place in the Heptagonals.
In the most recent dual meet against powerful Harvard the Indians bowed by an 81-58 score. The events were held in the rain which slowed the runners. Dartmouth's mile relay team of Tom Lennox, Jim Mueller, Jerry Boyle and Ford Daley won that event, while Karl Mayer, Gordon Barrett and Charlie Weingarten made a clean sweep in the javelin toss. Mayer also took second in the discus and third in the shot put. George Ramming took first in the discus, John Ebers firsts in the 120-yard high hurdles and 220-yard low hurdles, Boyle and Daley took second and third places in the 440-yard run, and Tom Lennox second in the 880 for Dartmouth's points.
Against Boston University the Indians came through with a 76-55 win, with George Ramming setting a new College record in the discus with a toss of 153 feet. Roger Coates was a double winner in the mile and two-mile races, while Karl Mayer showed his versatility by capturing first place in the javelin throw and third place in both the shotput and polevault events. Connie Persels and Norm Page were one-two in the high jump, Rick Husband won the broad jump, Dick Noel took pole-vaulting honors, and John Ebers won the 220-yard low hurdles.
In the most recent Heptagonal meet the Indians took sixth place in a field of ten. Yale won with Navy second and Harvard third. Karl Mayer took top honors for Dartmouth with a first place in the javelin throw with teammate Charlie Weingarten taking second. George Ramming set a new record in the discus with a toss of 157 feet 5 inches, and John Ebers took second in the 220-yard low hurdles.
