As fall rolls into full swing we find we are still catching up with summer's activities and the numerous events involving '42s. The month of August saw the appointment of Army Stambaugh as division manager of Gulf Oil Corporation's Boston Sales Division which covers virtually all of New England. He originally joined Gulf in 1948, and following a period of special assignment in the Cleveland Sales District, was transferred to the General Office in Pittsburgh in 1950. There he served as chairman of a committee on Special Market Research Projects until 1954, when he became administrative assistant to the vice president-Domestic Marketing. His transfer to the Boston Sales Division occurred in 1957 when he was placed in charge of Retail and Jobber Sales.
A trip to the Far East was made last May by Merrill McLane which included stops in Japan, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Malaya and Manila before returning to Honolulu, where in July a steering committee of the Dartmouth Club of Hawaii elected him as interim president until a full club meeting elects new officers. We assume that trip was in connection with his government work but wouldn't know for sure until we hear further from Merrill.
On the other side of the world, Alex Hooker, assistant professor at Ripon College in Wisconsin, who in the past has escorted college groups on Caribbean trips, was traveling in Europe with a group of students on the Ripon College Renaissance Tour. In the course of his travels, Alex had an opportunity to accept Alex Fanelli's open invitation to '42s to visit him in Rome. An enjoyable evening was had by all as might readily be imagined.
An August trip through Virginia and on up to Cape Cod for ten days by Tom McElin, with Sylvia and their two children, sort of rounded out the summer following Tom's July appointment as associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Medical School. For a number of years, Tom has been a practicing physician in and around Kenilworth, Ill.
Walt Elcock, formerly president of the Southern General Insurance Co. in Atlanta, has joined the Olympic Insurance Co. in Los Angeles as vice president and manager. Walt entered the insurance business in 1947 as secretary of the Progressive Fire Insurance Co., which was later merged with Southern General. With his wife Jessie, and their four children, he is making his new home at 2190 Oak Knoll Ave., San Marino, Calif.
Bob Rodgers writes of two new ventures, one of which we had noted in an earlier column would come to pass — that of Terri as a freshman at Bryn Mawr. Bob's "other," involves his new association with Independent Television Corp., after the better part of a decade with NBC. As I understand it, this is the United States branch of a British entertainment combine known as ATV, which distributes both American and British TV programs.
A new home is being built by Ev Johnsonin Montgomery, Ala., and I wonder if any "Blanding-like" experiences are involved? Besides construction activity, Ev is most busy as state manager for Kinnett-Edwards-Boyd, Ltd., the South's largest general agency for property insurance.
In September, Wallace & Tiernan, Inc. and R. J. Strasenburgh Co. agreed to merge, subject to stockholders' approval in December. Under the terms of the proposed merger, Strasenburgh will operate as a division of Wallace & Tiernan with Bob Strasenburgh becoming a director of the parent company. As a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, this would represent the second drug division for Wallace & Tiernan whose main interests have been industrial and specialty chemicals.

Don't forget to return the CLASS DIRECTORY QUESTIONNAIRE contained in the Class Newsletter. We would rather not assume we had the correct information.
Editor's Note: Dick Baldwin, 1942's distinguished and hard-working class secretary, has failed to report that at Vermont Academy's commencement banquet on June 4 he was awarded the Condict Cup, symbolic of being the Academy's "Man of the Year." Dick, who graduated from Vermont Academy in 1938, served as chairman of its alumni fund committee through the decade of the '50s and increased the fund's yield five-fold. He recently completed a three-year term as Alumni Trustee of the Academy.
