Frank C. Newman '38, professor of law, has been named to become Dean of the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, effective next July 1. A 1941 graduate of the School of Law at Berkeley, he is the first alumnus to be named Dean.

Newman has been a member of the Berkeley faculty since 1946 and specializes in the legislative process and administrative law. He is co-author of the textbook "Legislation: Cases and Materials" (1955), and has written articles on legal and govermental subjects. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard Law School and the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies. In 1957-58 he was one of the first two lawyers chosen to be Fellows at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford.

In addition to Dartmouth and California degrees, Newman received his LL.M. and J.S.D. from Columbia after World War II. He is active in bar association, government, and community affairs. The Newmans have two sons and two daughters and reside at 53 Acacia Drive, Orinda.
