Poetry at Dartmouth

M. L. Rosenthal in his recently published critical study and introduction The ModernPoets (New York: Oxford University Press) pays tribute to opportunities existing at Dartmouth in the realm of poetry. After referring to both Prof. Ramon Guthrie and Dilys Laing, late wife of Prof. Alexander Laing '25, the author comments, "We have unfortunately but a few groups like the one at Dartmouth in which poets can read and show their work to each other and receive criticism of the most practical kind, and in which the encouragement of beginners by masters and the candor of peers can be expected."
