IN the field events, loss of weightthrower Don Switzer and high-jumper Jim Markworth by graduation will be felt. Harris Wagenseil should have a great year in the vault, with slim strength behind him. Junior John Hoverman will lead the high-jump with backing from Gordon Rule. The broad-jump, always an uncertain event, could be a "gainer" with veterans Bill Hayden, Rick Rehberg, and Russ Pae. Junior George Mcllrath will head both throws with major support from sophomores Rud Porter and Jeff Spencer.
In the running events, Captain Rick Rehberg, Bob Haile, and Al Hine appear to be the top sprint candidates. Promising sophomores Gordon Rule and Alan Ott should team with veteran Jim Season to make this one of our brighter events.
The mile relay and 600 will be bolstered by Dave Stanley, freshman recordholder in the 440. Sophomore Howard Anderson also should help to strengthen these events, which are already "bright" with juniors Al Hine, Leigh Hall, and Steve Strom.
Sophomore Bill Bridge will be an asset to the 1000-twO-mile-relay complex, along with veterans Roy Benson and David Stout.
Steve Atwood and Steve Calvert improve the distance picture and will give greater flexibility in using the talents of Benson and Stout.
Overall prospect: better team than last year's. Hurdles and mid-distance have the most class in depth. Distance events improved.
