A tribute to Laurence Frederick Whittemore, late honorary member of Nineteen Sixteen from his Classmate Henry CliffordBean:
Although he was closely associated with the outstanding leaders of the country over the past twenty-five years he never lost the common touch. He was a country boy all the way, homespun and natural, and he loved New Hampshire. His stories of North Country life surpassed those of the best raconteurs that it has ever been my privilege to hear.
He knew for many months that his life span was measured in weeks, and yet he carried on to the last, and died with his "boots on."
Ken and May Tucker were planning to go up to the Hanover Inn towards the end of October to stay for a few weeks. Rog Evans was the October speaker at the 1916 Monthly Get-together at the Dartmouth Club, New York. He was to repeat the talk, "More About Asia," which he gave at the March meeting where the attendance was held down by blizzard weather. It was so interesting that a return performance was requested. At this writing I have not learned who was there.
Art and Caroline Conley are leaving the day after Christmas for a world cruise on the liner, President Monroe. They sail from San Francisco and will return to the good old US and A in May. Bon voyage, folks, and don't forget the post cards.
Your correspondent had a most delightful trip last month to Boston, that Athens of America, upon the occasion of the Harvard game. He accompanied the Wilsons, Stirlingand Betty, who stopped by from Washington to pick him up. The leisurely trip included a nice overnight stop at their daughter Peggy's home in Gales Ferry, Conn., and a luncheon visit with Hank and Polly Loudon '17 at their pleasant home in Dover, Mass. They left me at mine host's, Sam Cutler's in Newton and went on to stay with Jack and Kay English in Stoneham. Art andCaroline Conley were also guests of Sam and Lou. The Sixteen Dinner at the Algonquin Club on the eve of the game produced a large turnout and was most enjoyable. The roster: Joe Newmark, Toastmaster; Bailey, Baker, Bobst, Coffin, Conley, Cutler, Ellis, English, Hayden, Jardine, Lord, Marsden, McQuesten, Mullen, Ralph Parker, Parkhurst, Pelletier, Burt Phinney (easily the most distinguished-looking gentleman present), Shanahan, Soule, Steinert, Tyler, and Wilson. Lucille Cutler was unable to attend the game next day because of a cold, but that did not prevent her from playing hostess at a swell cocktail party after the game. The house was bulging with guys and dolls, some who had not been at a '16 shindig since the Lord knows when. I was especially glad to see Carl and Elizabeth Lincoln, strangers to me for many years. Sam and Lou's sons, Sam '45 and Dick '50 and their families were also there, as well as neighbors Pete and Lucy Olds '17. As for the game, it was all right. Such an opinion, I know, indicates a mellowing. Not many years ago the weekend would have been spoiled if we had not won. Your correspondent found himself with the treasonous thought that it would have been too bad if Harvard had lost, since they played the better game. A verse from a Scottish poem, whose author he cannot recall, popped into his head:
Then up, lads, and at it though sharp be the weather,
15, by misckance, you skou16 happen to fall,
There are worse things by far than a tumble on beatber,
And life is itself but a game of football.
Bill and Ruth McKenzie came on from Ohio and were in Hanover for the Penn and Brown games.
A letter from Carl Eskeline from sunny Cal advising that Dan and Christine Lindsley had spent a week with Esky and Lucile and that Dan and Jean Dinsmoor had stopped by, "everybody looking like a million dollars."
A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all Sixteeners.
