The Class expresses its deep regret to Anne Brown and her family at the death of Bob Brown, which occurred January 24. Anne has written thanking the Class for the beautiful flowers it sent and extending the sincere appreciation of her family for the thoughtfulness of the Class.
Fletch Andrews of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, retired dean of the Western Reserve Law School, will be the speaker for the Fifty Year Class, and will also be the toastmaster at 1916's Class Dinner on Saturday, June 11, - a rare good fortune for the Class and the College.
I hope you will all read the review by Donald Bartlett '24 (Professor of Biography) of Ed Kirkland's latest book, "Charles Francis Adams Jr. 1835-1915; The Patrician at Bay." The review appeared in the February DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Ed, as you may know, is professor emeritus of American history at Bowdoin, and lives in Thetford Center, Vt. His book was also most interestingly reviewed in the New York Times Book Review by Roger Butterfield, under the title, "Uncle Charlie's Uncle Charlie." The first mentioned Uncle Charlie was Charles Francis Adams, who was a "20th-century financier, treasurer of Harvard, President Hoover's Secretary of the Navy and the best racing skipper on the Massachusetts coast for upwards of 50 years." The second Uncle Charlie, subject of Ed's book, must have been a hilarious old son-of-a-gun, and very free with his tongue. Of him Ed remarks, "Charles did not resent having been born- 'he simply resented having been born young." Mr. Butterfield wrote that Ed is ideally equipped to make the story clear and interesting, since Ed has specialized in transportation history, and has a witty, compact style. He has drawn mostly on unpublished material, letters, diaries, and private notes (memorabilia) where Adams set down startling opinions on almost everyone. The book was also capably reviewed in other papers. It was fun reading the reviews, but it should be more fun reading the book.
Kay English has had a wonderful trip to the West Coast visiting with her family. The Class rolled out the red carpet for her. Among other things they got together for a luncheon in Kay's honor. Dan and JeanDinsmoor were in charge of the festivities. Eighteen were invited and eleven were able to accept, the best gathering of 16ers on the Coast so far. Roly and Kathleen Wass drove the 65 miles from San Clemente and Carl Eskeline came from Santa Barbara. The others were from the Los Angeles area.... Burtand Sarah Lowe were vacationing briefly in Florida, Burt, our Head Class Agent, apparently getting up steam for the campaign. ... Friends of the late Bob Harvey and his widow, Margaret Posey Wilson Harvey, will be sorry to learn of her death recently in Springfield, Mass. She was a sister of our late Classmate, Stirling Wilson
Eight of the old standbys were present at the '16 Get Together and Dinner at the Dartmouth Club, Friday, February 25. ... Art Barak has returned to the home diggings after a few years in Sun City, Ariz. Art's comment, "Sun City was fine, only my wife and I got too lonely out there, so we came back closer to our friends and relatives." I am interested in Art's move because I have a cousin who moved to Sun City from Cohasset, hasset, Mass., a few years back, and I have wondered how long an old herring-choker from the coast of Massachusetts could stand the change.
When I was in Hanover in January with Burt Lowe he told me that the interim contributions to the Alumni Fund by 16ers totaled $3,500. He inquired, perhaps facetiously, if we should treat that as one-tenth Of our total. The Class Executive Committee has fixed $25,000 as a target amount, one which would be in keeping with our Fiftieth Year Reunion. As the campaign slogan they have taken
LET'S ARRIVE WITH TWENTY-FIVE
Since there will be no solicitation of Alumni Fund at Reunion everyone is urged to get his gift to Hanover before that time. As of this writing (the last of February) 75 men of the Class and 74 wives, widows, sons, daughters, and friends have accepted for our Fiftieth Reunion. By the time this is in print it is expected that quite a few more will be within the fold. The names of those who had indicated that they would be on hand were published in a March Newsletter.
