Competition for Dartmouth's skiers as a team has been confined to the Dartmouth Winter Carnival so far this season. The Williams Carnival, scheduled for the weekend after the Hanover meet, had to be called off because of bad weather. McGill, Middlebury and Norwich (EISA championships) will stage three more carnival meets in which Dartmouth will be seeking revenge for the loss of its own 50th anniversary meet to Middlebury last month, 591.6 to 581.2.
Although the Big Green captured firsts in the downhill, slalom and cross-country, Middlebury had better depth and team balance and was particularly strong in the jump and Nordic combined, in which their freshman pair, John Bower and Dave Hanscom, were one-two. Dartmouth's individual winners were Captain Art Bookstrom in the slalom, Jim DeLong in the downhill, and Bob Bigelow in the cross-country. The Green's best team showing was in the cross-country, with Charlie Lund, Skip Bean and Art Bookstrom adding third, fourth and fifth to Bigelow's winning performance.
At the end of the first day's competition, Dartmouth led the Panthers, 1961 to 194.2. In view of Middlebury's jumping strength, the Indians knew that their best hope of winning the Carnival meet was to sweep the Saturday morning downhill. Although DeLong finished first, Mid- dlebury captured the next three spots, and Roger Hackley in 6th place was the Green's second best.
Middlebury's winning performance gave it the Dartmouth Carnival Cup for two years in a row. Behind runner-up Dartmouth came New Hampshire, Norwich, Maine, Williams, McGill and Vermont, in that order.
In the Pico Giant Slalom, Art Bookstrom finished second, behind Chick Igaya '57, Roger Hackley was sth, and Hartley Paul was 9 th. In the USE ASA Giant Slalom championships at Whiteface, Bookstrom and Hackley finished in the same places, second and fifth. Another big event in January was the Stowe Cup Races, in which Jim DeLong took 4th in the downhill and 6th in the Alpine combined. Bill Smith was sth in the Stowe downhill, followed by Hartley Paul 7th, Art Bookstrom 14th and Dick Nordhaus 15th. Freshmen Buster Welch and Jim Page finished first and third in the "B" giant slalom at Wildcat.
In Nordic competition, the Dartmouth team of Bob Bigelow, Charlie Lund, Sam Baker and Pete Hawks won the Putney Cross-Country Relay Championship. In Class A cross-country races, Bigelow also finished second at Lebanon and fifth at Lyndonville. In the Class C jump at Lebanon, Skip Bean and Bill Burton finished one-two; while in the "B" crosscountry race at Lyndonville, Bean, Lund, Bookstrom, Breen and Hawks were in the top ten.
