Written March 28, Vero Beach, Fla. Temperature 82 degrees. Sunshine, flowers, birds - everywhere. Sitting in shirt sleeves watching the Dodgers beat the Yankees - shuffle board - swimming. Cocktail party celebrating the birthday of the wife of the secretary - losing a quarter at cribbage in the evening - retire eleven P.M. This is just a sample of these days of leisure at L. G. Treadway's '08 delightful hotel, The Royal Park Inn.
Recently in this column your secretary remarked - "What a great privilege Dartmouth men enjoy in sharing in the wonderful Dartmouth fellowship - irrespective of class affiliations, and never better exemplified than here at this Hotel at Vero Beach." Gathered here with their wives are men from 1902, 1904, 1905, 1908, 1910, 1914, 1922, and other classes have been represented. Though far from the home campus, all have a common interest, a sincere respect for each other and friendships formed - unique, precious, lasting.
Robbie and his wife Hope and their lovely granddaughter Betsy are here with Sally and Beck. The Edgerbys dropped in to see us and we had a delightful lunch together. Edge has broken nearly every bone on the left side of his body, and will now start on the right side and despite these casualties, Edge gets around. Nice to see them. While here at Vero, Robbie and the secretary have re ceived many fine letters from the "Boys" and some of the "Girls."
Rosy and Ellen are in Clearwater and sent greetings - it's 150 miles to Vero Beach. Rosy's shoes were being re-soled at the cobblers — so he couldn't walk over. Leon Webster's been circulating throughout Florida and wrote from Anna Maria where they were visiting with Mrs. Drew, whom we hope may come visit us while here. A nice note too from Harriet Muchemore. From the frozen North have come messages from Carl and Marion Woods — just back from the Barbados - and from Penfield and John and Augusta Fletcher.
While here too came a note from Harry Morse, Santa Barbara, Calif., asking for the California address of Crack Corn Smith. Harry, I left it home in Massachusetts and will send it to you when I get home April 25.
Have had fine visits with the Dows 1902 and Roger and Mrs. Brown 1905. Roger told me Perce Hobbs was in Sarasota. Perce long ago gave up baseball but is now equally good at shuffleboard - the secretary sends a challenge for a game.
This man Woods sent me his annual report — as President of the Massachusetts Business Development Corporation. Carl gives his time and talent to the Corporation - all for free to encourage industry in the state. Only God and Carl can save the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The team is doing a good job.
No disquieting news of serious disability has reached the Secretary from classmates. It's good to report - all's well - keep eating Wheaties and Cheerio.
