Dartmouth's informal Rugby Club teams continue to dominate eastern play and did very well on their spring trip to the West Coast. After an initial loss to the University of California, 6-0, the ruggers defeated St. Mary's College, 21-0, and then entered the Monterey Tournament where they battled the Olympic Club to a scoreless tie in the second round of play. They also had a scoreless tie with U.C.L.A. and bowed in a consolation game to Stanford, 5-3. The tourney winner was the Olympic Club.
However, the Big Green avenged the Stanford loss when in early April they defeated Stanford, 9-0, in a game played at West Point and televised nationally by CBS-TV as part of its Sports Spectacular series. All of Dartmouth's points came on penalty kicks, with football star Jake Crouthamel booting all three home. The Big Green clearly had the edge over Stanford throughout the contest, but missed several good scoring opportunities.
Opening their formal spring schedule, the rugby team whipped Yale, 11-5, although the B team lost to Yale, 16-3. Art Cockburn was outstanding for Dartmouth at scrum, while Jake Crouthamel and Tom Conger continued to'excel at the halfback posts.
