Through the courtesy of the editor, Charlie Widmayer, your Secretary was privileged to have the picture of 1904, at its 57th Reunion at Hanover, presented herewith.
For a bottle fed group, average age above eighty, veterans of many roundups and reunions, the Secretary has been besieged with the query: How do you keep them young? The answer: The brand is Old Granddad.
A salute to our incomparable class agent Squid Lampee with contributions by the Class of $6,099 (198% of quota) to the Dartmouth Alumni Fund for 1961. Our thanks to the women of 1904, so many of whom contributed so generously toward the fund. Our thanks too, to all Dartmouth men, parents and donors, 20,936 of them, who helped to raise the magnificent sum of $1,015,545 for Dartmouth. "It may be a small college but there are those who love her."
This picture has been sent to most every known living man who at any time was a part of the Class of 1904. Your Secretary has been richly rewarded by the many letters of thanks from men who rarely correspond with him. His thoughtful naming of the men left to right helped many men who have rarely, if ever, attended our reunion to recognize who was who. Major Sharpe's comment: "Splendid, for bottle scarred veterans."
During the summer - many of the widows of Classmates have written the Secretary. Their expressions of appreciation that they are still remembered as a part of 1904, that they are keenly interested in Dartmouth and the members of 1904, have brought to the Secretary a very deep feeling of gratitude. Thank you, dear girls!
Here are a few notes from men whom the Secretary rarely hears from: HarryMorse, Santa Barbara, Calif., delighted to see some of the boys and sends regards to all.
Nice notes too from Eddie MacLennan and Reddy Hatch, both residents of Santa Monica, Calif. - Eddie just back from a wonderful cruise to Spain and other European areas - Reddy is in a nursing home, well cared for.
From Captain Hardy of Seattle came word of the death of our classmate GuyEric Woodward of Seattle, and a lovely letter from Mrs. Woodward telling of the long illness of Guy. Your Secretary has often expressed his deep respect for her devoted care of Guy during many years of his illness. He passed away July 21.
Your Secretary received word too of the death of Billy MacKeen of Dallas, Texas. Billy passed away August 9, 1957 — yes that is the correct date. In spite of many letters and postcards sent to Bill, which were never returned, the Secretary was not aware of his death until notice from the Alumni Records Office sent the information. Your Secretary telephoned to Bill's daughter, Mrs. Howard Johnston of Shippensburg, Penna., and hopes to receive a complete record of Bill since 1956 when last heard from.
Rosy and Ellen Hinman recently celebrated their 49th Wedding Anniversary. They were present at the June Commence- ment to see their grandson graduate with the Class of 1961. There will always be a Hinman in Dartmouth. Our congratulations to Ellen and Rosy - a couple who have shared together love and loyalty and devotion for almost fifty years. Bless you dear folks.
Mose and lola Withey have been spending the summer in Northern Wisconsin; lola had a bad fall and Mose has had to do the dishes. We hope lola has fully recovered.
The Burdetts are back in their Brattleboro home. Both have had a "spell of bad health," but are now somewhat improved. Our best to you both.
Nice cordial note from Frank Stowell, Chicago, the only 1904 man left of the Chicago gang. Frank has been in the construction business all his adult career. He sent his greetings to all - and especially to Owen and Betty Burdett.
Bruce and Mrs. Sanborn of St. Paul have spent part of the summer in their lovely home in Lenox - recently Bruce was in for a sip of Granddad, to help him climb Court House Hill. We had a fine visit together.
Carl Woods is better - spent part of the summer at his summer home West Island, Fairhaven on Cape Cod. We rejoice in his improvement and pray for his full recovery.
Robbie has had a session in the hospital with a ruptured retina, is now back in his lovely home at South Dartmouth, Mass., in the care of his devoted wife, Hope. We pray the operation has been successful. Keep looking, fellar!!!
Sexton and Squid not quite up to par, but they will be around when we have a party the night before the Harvard game. Sorry to say Beck will be missing.
Note, at the masthead new address - 1766-42 nd Ave., Vero Beach, Fla., as of Oct. 1.
Sally and Beck went down to Florida the middle of May and bought a little home, modest but adequate, where the red carpet will always be out for the 1904 family, and where, in keeping with Florida sunshine - warmth and welcome — we shall always be happy to share with you. We may become Confederates - but never Democrats.
Secretary, 1766 42nd Ave., Vero Beach, Fla.
