After a vain attempt to return this column to its proper hands, it appears that you are in for another session with "Meatball." A tremendous backlog of news has piled up over the summer months so I will attempt to sort out some of the more significant events and leave the majority to "Ransk."
Bob Sands reports in from Berlin that the off-duty life there is tops despite the mounting crisis. Bob has been in contact with Trygve Kroeplien who is working in Frankfort for a newspaper. Presently he is in Wiesbaden taking part in an international marketing seminary, dealing with the marketing problems of the two free trade areas in Europe.
The University of Kansas' loss is Hamline University's gain this fall as Cary Stiff assumes his new post as instructor in creative literature. Cary has completed two years of advanced work in English at the University of Kansas, during which time he served as an assistant instructor. He has had several books of poems published including "Reel Upon the Written Dune," which contains eighteen Stiff originals. In his new assignment he will teach creative writing and freshman English.
Warren Huse has decided to make the Army his career and has accepted a RA commission in the infantry. He plans to attend the Infantry Officers Orientation Class, Airborne, and Ranger School before reporting to the 503rd Airborne Battle Group in Okinawa.
Members of the Flying Club will be interested in knowing that Don Monaco is making jet aviation his career. Don is presently in New Mexico flying KC-135 tanker jets and will continue piloting these big planes around until he is transferred to a SAC base here in the East. Don spends his spare time teaching other jet pilots how to fly small private planes. That is quite a switch!
Also helping to strengthen our armed forces we find Ted Izzard who has been receiving experience in driving the Army's medium tank and has become proficient in firing the .50 caliber machine gun and the 90 millimeter tank gun. Dick Schmidt has also become quite outstanding in the ranks of the Armor. Dick was tank commander of the crew which recently won first place in the 68th Armored Regiment's annual qualification firing of the tank gun in Battmholder, Germany, which then qualified Dick as a member of the "400 Club" for registering a perfect score of 400.
The Harvard Voluntary Defenders have elected Ron Kehoe to the position of vicepresident of research and appeals for the academic year of 1961-62. The Defenders is a group of thirty second- and third-year law students which assists the Boston Voluntary Defenders Committee in giving free legal counsel.
The art of love is still showing its strength among our classmates. Jim Penza was married to Sandra Hutchings on August 5. Jim is entering his third year of med school at Harvard Medical College, in September. Sandra has accepted a position with the Pratt Diagnostic Hospital in Boston where she will carry on with her profession of nursing. Shaker Heights, Ohio, was the setting of the wedding of Charlie Pinkerton to Elizabeth Breckenridge. The newlyweds will be residing in Philadelphia, where Charlie will be attending the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Bob Foote took time off from his Coast Guard duties to take Julie Ann Bassage as his wife. They are living in Coral Gables, Fla., where Bob is stationed.
Norm Blair has become engaged to Sally Trussell of Milton, Mass. Norm is presently stationed at Ft. Meade, Md.
