Just received a telegram notifying me that I was one week late for the deadline - fine beginning for the Acting Secretary. However, this does bring back memories of my old study habits in addition to much nostalgia.
Having a minimum of material at hand, I will proceed to steal a bit of copy from Harry Shaw's last collection and finish up with a few "meatballs."
WEDDING BELLS
Herb Grant took as his bride on June 16, Barbara Morrill of Portsmouth, N. H. Following the wedding they took a honeymoon to the White Mountains with their final residence being Quantico, Va., where Herb is serving as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Present at the wedding were Harry Davis, Ernest Behrens and Kent Neilson.
Another New Hampshire wedding took place in Laconia where Dick Forster and Norma Morin were Wed in the middle of June. There followed a honeymoon to the Cape and then back to Boston, where Dick is a student at Boston University School of Medicine.
New Hampshire seems to be the place to get married. Again in the middle of June we find John Goodrich and Mary Yudicky exchanging vows in Manchester. The couple took a honeymoon trip to Nova Scotia, and then returned to Cincinnati where John is working for Eagle Pitcher Corp.
Now going South some, we find Long Island the next area of this wonderful joining together. Peter Jaffe and Joan Fox were married in the early part of July and after a trip to Bermuda returned to New York and Woodbridge Hall, Columbia University, where Pete is a second-year law student.
Still going South, we stop at Washington, D. C., and find that Mike Ivy has taken as his bride Carolyn Edna Johnson of Arlington, Va. Mike is now studying at Harvard Medical School.
In New Jersey we find that Mike Stern has given up his bachelor freedom for Ellen Pollack. After a trip to Bermuda in June he returned to his job with Lybrand, Ross Brothers and Montgomery.
The long list of medical students getting married indicates that if one wants to stay free this is the wrong profession to be in. Steve Levine and Rhea Cottier were the happy couple in a June wedding held in Brooklyn, N. Y. Steve is a second-year student at the N.Y.U. School of Medicine.
Jamestown, N. Y., was the location that Barclay Wellman and Diane Taylor will long remember as the place of their marriage. Barclay is currently in the Army as a 2nd Lt. and upon completion of his training at Aberdeen he will be permanently stationed in Huntsville, Ala.
Another student of law, Leon Wilson, was wed in June to Judith Krasny of Milburn, N. J. He will take up his residence this fall as a second-year law student at Cornell. And another maker-to-be of the law, Phil Swain, married Claudette Brancato in Sands Point, N. Y., in August. Phil is now a student of Columbia Law School and upon graduation will put in a few months' service with Uncle Sam.
Journeying back to Hanover, we find that another classmate, Jim Mueller, did not wander too far from school in his search, for Nancy Ingram of Norwich, Vt., is now his wife. They are living in Hanover this fall as Jim finishes at Tuck.
Jim Wooster and Elizabeth Hendrie of Glen Ridge, N. J., and Smith College exchanged vows early in June and from there journeyed to Newport, R. I., where Jim is stationed in the Navy. Another Navy man to join the ranks of the married was BrutHedges who took Margaret Seybolt as his wife in early July. The Hedges are now living in Orange, Texas, where Brut is stationed with the Navy.
Switching to the Marine Corps, we learn that Ross Farrar married Nancy Towle of Winchester, Mass., and Fisher Jr. College in late April. The couple now live in San Diego, where Ross is stationed.
Going out to the West coast we find another of the die-hard bachelors is married, Mark Gates to Elizabeth Wilson. After a wedding in late June attended by Al Brown and Curt Christianson, the couple had the tough time of spending the summer in the Hawaiian Islands. Well, after a hard year and another one coming up at Stanford Law School, Mark needed a trip for relaxation!
Sticking with my old roommates, I find that another has just bit the dust. Don Peterson has taken as the bride Margaret McKee of Detroit. He is presently serving as a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps, station unknown.
Not wanting to make our married brethren feel that they are the only ones in the Class (though it is beginning to look that way), I turn to those about to cross the threshold.
ENGAGEMENTS
None other than John Baldwin has asked Mary Houck to be his wife. John is currently working toward his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the California Institute of Technology, while Mary is a student at Pomona College. Another student to ask the question is Dave Baker and the girl is Ina Fleegler who graduated from Antioch College in June. Dave is currently attending the University of Pittsburgh.
Going abroad for a minute (where I was by chance with Uncle Sam all summer - Spain, France, Italy, Sicily, Mallorca and Gilbraltar) we find that Jon Mandaville asked Janet Haskins to be his bride in a wedding to take place in either August or September. Janet is studying at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, while Jon is working in Middle Eastern languages and history at the same school. Tanet's home is in Greenfield, Mass.
And finally, back at home, we find the announcement of Max Fisher's engagement to Janet Chaffe of Winchester, Mass., and Colby Jr. College '59. Max is a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps stationed with the First Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
As for Phi Delt gossip, most of it is unprintable at this time, but I have managed to salvage a tew scraps for the record. Earl Glazier is a supply officer on Okinawa, among other things, and is keeping a close eye on Scotty Booma, who has just arrived on the island of adventure and romance. Carl Schulz, who is a damage control officer somewhere in the Pacific, is presently trying to save up enough money to repay a debt to his Philadelphia brother and is seeking financial advice over ship to ship radio from that great lover and academy award runner-up Dave Allen.
Ted Izzard dropped by here recently on his way to several job interviews in the industrial consultant field, which Ted hopes to enter after finishing up this fall at U.C.L.A. graduate school. While in town he was entertained by Bill and Tina Colehower. Tina is becoming an excellent cook while Bill is learning all about the textile and plastic industry under the employment of Jomac Co., Inc. while also turning in a fine job of scouting for Coach Blackman. I understand that Goody Gilman will give up his position as elder statesman of Newport and become Ambassador to the Antarctica if the right Party wins.
Enough for now - that is all the news I can round up. It is needless to say that I would appreciate all or any news that comes my way, unless you prefer to be loaded with my traveling salesman experiences and other Phi Doodle material. Please drop me a line; a postcard will do. Let's all get in the act and fill this column with names and facts.
Flash! I have just broken into the news column with the announcement of my engagement to Linda Newton who is presently attending Penn. A spring wedding is planned. More to follow on that later.
Best wishes to you and yours, until next month....
