Coach Whitey Burnham has greeted his second Big Green soccer team, which includes fifteen lettermen and several fine sophomores.
On the credit side of the ledger is the return of wing Steve Chase, the team's leading scorer in 1960, and John Stobo, who was All-Ivy last year at fullback. Also back is wing Konrad Streuli, and Captain Jerry Pepper, a fine ball-handler, at inside-right. Pepper has good speed and is the kind of ball player who inspires his teammates.
Another starting assignment that seems assured is at goal, where Dave Smoyer heads up a strong group of net-tenders. Other lettermen returning include Dick Ellington and Charlie Goldthwaite, goalies, Hugh Johnson, Stu Johnson, Bill Maloney, Bob Mattoon, Frank Mori, Mike Schwartz, Dave Smith, and Don Wertz. One sophomore who could possibly break into the starting line-up is Ivars Bebris, a standout on the 1960 freshman team, who plays forward.
This year's team will be out to improve on the 4-3 Ivy League record of last year. Coach Burnham, however, is not overly optimistic about the outlook. The schedule is the same as last year except that Middlebury has replaced Connecticut and Amherst, two other inde- pendents on the schedule, were nationally ranked last year by the NCAA, and Harvard, Yale and Princeton can always be expected to field strong soccer teams.
The outlook, therefore, is "wait and see."
