JANUARY 1963 DAVE ORR '57

The 1963 track team is like an orphan without a home. The old track in Alumni Gymnasium has disappeared, making way for a new pool and basketball court; the new track in the field house is not expected to be ready until after Christmas. For Coach Ellie Noyes this has posed a special problem. Despite the cold weather some men have been running outdoors, while others have preferred the makeshift but warmer confines of Alumni Gymnasium.

How the 1963 track team will fare is difficult to say. There are a number of individual performers like Gerry Ashworth in the sprints, Tom Holzel in the middle distances, Cam Duncan in the hurdles, and Fred Bates in the pole vault who should earn their share of points. But the Green will be hurting in the distance events, where graduation took away three talented runners. The top runner in both the mile and two mile is expected to be Pete Wells, who did well this fall in cross country. The Indians should have their best depth in the pole vault where Bates, College record holder, leads a field of five aspirants.

The first dual meet, scheduled for January 5 with Boston University, has been postponed until February 12. The first meet in the new field house will take place January 19 against the University of Maine. Next month, therefore, we should have a great deal more to report concerning track.
