A group of sophomore backs behind a veteran line overpowered the University of New Hampshire on Memorial Field, 28-3. It was the eleventh Indian win against their state rivals in a series which has yet to see a UNH victory. When the starting backfield seemed unable to click on offense it was the sophomores who came to the rescue. Tom Spangenberg and Dave Lawson accounted for three of the four Dartmouth touchdowns.

It was the line, though, that showed signs of greatness on defense, holding the Wildcats to a total of six yards rushing for the entire game, despite the loss of McKinnon in the first quarter.

The Wildcats jumped off to an auspicious start with a first quarter field goal. The score was set up when the Indians fumbled a UNH punt and the visitors recovered the ball on the Dartmouth 25-yard line. New Hampshire moved to the 13 where on fourth down it decided to settle for three points.

Early in the second quarter the alert Big Green line broke through to break up a UNH quick-kick attempt. Carter Strickland blocked the kick and Bill Blumenschein pursued the pigskin into the end zone where he fell on it for six points. Bill Wellstead converted and the Indians had a 7-3 lead.

Before the half time intermission the sophomores came into their own. As a result of a bad UNH punt, the Green found itself with the ball on the Wildcat 26-yard line. On the first play quarterback Ron Schram hit Spangenberg with a perfect pass for thirteen yards. Two plays later Schram again connected with Spangenberg this time for eight yards and the TD. At halftime the score read Dartmouth 14, UNH 3. C

The Indians put the game on ice with touchdowns in each of the last two quarters. Late in the third period Spangenberg broke off right tackle for the longest run of the day, a 53-yard carry that ended on the New Hampshire 12. Three plays later Spangenberg scored from the seven on the same play.

In the fourth quarter it was halfback Dave Lawson who brought the Dartmouth fans to their feet with a 20-yard run from the New Hampshire 28. After a five-yard gain by Vancura, Lawson carried the ball over from the two-yard line. Wellstead completed a perfect afternoon with four extra points in as many attempts.
