The season is still young but Coach Whitey Burnham's soccer team has had its share of tough luck. To date the Green booters have a 1-2 record, with both defeats being handed to them by the identical margin of 2-1.
In their Chase Field opener against the University of Connecticut the Indians saw the Huskies move out in front 2-0 before Captain Jerry Pepper, from his inside right position, tallied for the Green. The goal, however, came late in the final period. Goalie Dave Smoyer made 29 saves against a strong UConn team.
At Philadelphia the Green won its Ivy League opener against Penn, 3-2. The first Indian goal came off the foot of a Quaker defender who inadvertently put the ball into his own nets. Shortly afterwards the Indians' Lee Chilcote added a tally to make the score 2-0.
At this point the Quakers turned on the steam and within the space of two minutes tied up the game. The tie lasted until late in the third period when sophomore forward Ivars Bebris scored the tie breaker. Hugh Johnson was credited with an assist on the play.
The Indians' hold on first place in the Ivy League was short-lived as Brown came to Hanover and scored a 2-1 victory. On muddy, rain-swept Chase Field, the Green dominated the play, taking 23 shots as compared with ten for the Bruins. Johnson scored the only Indian goal from his outside right position when he recovered a rebound and sent it back into the nets from close up. This third period goal tied the score at 1-1, but Brown came up with a tie-breaker in the fourth period to win.
The long and short of it, demonstratedby Quarterback Ron Schram (6-4) andHalfback Chris Vancura (5-8), is thatfootball skill comes in different sizes.
