Whitey Burnham's wrestling team is off to a good start following a 26-8 victory over Worcester Poly. WPI was considered a tough opener for the Green for it already held decisions over Tufts, Rhode Island, and University of Massachusetts. The Indians, however, jumped off to an early lead with two forfeit wins and then registered a pair of pins to clinch the WPI contest.

Jack Christy at 123 and Karl DuPuy at 130, captain of this year's team, were not tested as they won via the forfeit route. Their teammates, though, showed to good advantage. Denny Eberl, runnerup in his weight division last year in the New Englands, recorded a second period pin at 137. Sophomore Tom O'Keeffe at 147 made the score 20-0 with a convincing pin.

Letterman Ivars Bembris, a senior, lost his match at 157, but it was close all the way. In other matches Floyd Moore, another senior letterman, scored a decision at 167. Bob Reidy lost on a pin at 177 and in the final match, Wally Buschmann was very impressive as he registered an 11-4 decision in the unlimited weight division.

Coach Burnham has a total of four lettermen and several promising sophomores who should contribute to a successful season. The matmen, however, will be hard pressed to improve on their record of last winter which saw only one defeat at the hands of Springfield College. Among the top sophomore prospects, Buschmann was undefeated as a freshman. Others who should see action this winter include Robin Carpenter at 157, Paul Buffum at 167, and John Keane, who was also undefeated as a freshman and champion of his division. All three men are sophomores.

The wrestling match with Tufts has been postponed until March, because of adverse weather conditions on January 11.
