Coach Earl Hamilton's freshman football team has completed a successful season, winning four while losing two. After opening wins against Brown, 7-6, and Holy Cross, 40-6, the Green was defeated by Harvard, 27-20, and Yale, 5-2. It then walloped New Hampshire, 41-6, and Connecticut, 36-0.
There will be many fine men moving up to the varsity next year, some of whom may well be heard from during the 1964 season. Paul Klungness showed good speed, running 80 yards against Harvard and returning punts for touchdowns against both New Hampshire and Connecticut. Another speedster is Andrew Danvers, Connecticut state champion in the 220 last spring. He went 70 yards on a pass play against Harvard.
Four quarterbacks should be mentioned: Malcolm Beard of Auburndale, Mass., Bill Robb of Columbus, Ohio, Bill Hay of Champaign, Ill., and Tom Walsh of Fort Wayne, Ind. All four have good potential, and at least one of them may see action with the varsity next fall.
The varsity should also receive help at fullback, guard, and end. Pete Walton, 220-pound fullback, is strong and fast; Bob Steiner, Harold Maskiell, and Phil Sunderland are just three of several good prospects at guard; and Captain Bill Calhoun and Bob MacLeod are the two leading ends. MacLeod is the son of Bob MacLeod '39, an All-American in 1938.
The freshman soccer team completed its season with a record of four wins, three losses, and two ties. In a big victory it defeated Harvard, 2-1, while being tied by Williams, 1-1, and bowing to St. Paul's, 2-1.
In freshman cross country the story was the same as the varsity counterpart, with only one victory in five meets and that was against B.U.
