New Year's weekend brought a great turnout of '56s to Hanover. Guests at my place included Rus Brace, Butch Leavitt, SteveSwenson, Bert Whittemore, and Brew Blackall. Phil Langtry, Fen Riley, Pete and BobbyLauterbach, Nate Metzger, Bob French, BenTaylor, and John Strong were also in the area, and I tried to gather up news over bowls of soup and sandwiches at the Dartmouth Ski-Way Cafeteria. Much of the news has been covered by Wil's great Christmas Wha-Who Whisper, but here are some additional items.
Butch Leavitt is engaged to a really sweet girl, Katrina McLane. Katrina graduated from Mt. Holyoke in 1958 and received her Master's Degree at Wheelock. She is teaching school in New York now but seems to get home to Avon, Conn., quite often. Butch teaches geometry and earth science at Avon Old Farms School and is coach of the Avon Ski team. His team is now training for its meet against Steve Swenson's squad at The Darrow School in New York. Steve teaches the same courses as Butch but still appears to be unattached as far as women are concerned.
Russ Brace arrived in Hanover with an attractive girl for the New Year's celebration, and the two of them disappeared from the party just before midnight. Russ lives in Camden, Me., and is editor of "The Maine Coast Fisherman." This entails getting to know the fishermen, selling advertising in New York, writing, publishing, and a pretty busy schedule, which Russ manages well.
Bert Whittemore had a fantastic tale to tell of the travels of Dick Kurts and himself in Europe and then aboard the 72-foot sailboat "Cottonblossom." They sailed from Genoa through the Med, had a close passing with the "Christopher Colombo" one night and pulled in to Spain. Then they proceeded down the Coast of Africa to the Canary Islands and followed the Trade Winds for three weeks to St.' Thomas Island in the Virgin Islands. Bert returned home December 12 in good time for some excellent skiing. He also reported on the interesting exploits of Frenchman Tom Penchoen whom he visited in Paris.
Phil Langtry drove up to Hanover from the deep South with Nate Metzger. Phil works for Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Nashville, and Nate is in Virginia and the Carolinas with the tobacco industry.
Fen Riley and an attractive girl from Boston were chaperoning each other at the D.O.C. cabin half way up on the Ski-Way. Fen is doing well at Harvard Medical School and has five months to go there. (Frequent and complete changes seem to be necessary for the overworked.)
Somehow I managed to skip this bit of news when I first learned of it several months ago. Bruce Brinkema married a girl from Ottumwa, lowa, Julie Schrader, on October 8. (Haven't heard from him since.) Don Campbell finished a tour with the Army in Korea and is now with Pittsburgh Plate Glass. In early November he became engaged to Jay Frances Topping of West Orange, N. J. JaY graduated from Bradford Junior and Northwestern University. Mott Hupfel is engaged to Alice Beasley of New Castle, Penna. Alice graduated from Bradford Junior last spring.
John and Bev Wilcox have their first child, John Craig, born December 2. A baby boy, Gregory Stewart was born on November 28 to Tom and Kay Strauss.
Bud Schattman is now assistant to the president of Standard Food Products Corp. After Tuck School, Bud served with the Hanover Bank, New York, and was a member of the faculty of the American Institute of Banking. Lee Gammill is doing well in insurance sales. He was recently appointed assistant manager of the New York Life, San Francisco Office. Lee has been interviewing prospective students for Dartmouth, and he and Jane live at 1935 Clay St. in San Francisco.
Leeb Libo, who attended Tufts Dental School and received his degree in accountancy and business administration from the University of Oregon, has been promoted to be head cost accountant for Atkinson Company in Pasco, Wash.
Jim Cochrane married Sarah Gam well Biddie of Middletown, N. J., a graduate of Pine Manor. Jim has been at Temple University Law School. Dick Abrams and Patricia Wertheim are married. Dick is with CBS-TV and his wife works for. McGraw-Hill. Pat graduated from Connecticut College last June. Two more Connecticut College girls are engaged to classmates of ours. One is Robin Foster '61 of West Newton, Mass., to Line Spaulding and the other is Margie Zellers of Southport, Conn., to Gordie Lenci. Line and Gordie both took the big step in December, and both girls' fathers went to Dartmouth. Bill Howenstein is engaged to a Bennett Junior girl from Grosse Pointe, Lorna Candler.
Ed Leja did postgraduate work with the Chemistry Department at the University of Massachusetts and then studied for his law degree at Boston College. He was a member of the editorial staff of "The Annual Survey of Massachusetts Law" and "The Commercial and Industrial Law Review." Ed has now passed his bar exam and is on active duty with the Air National Guard.
Steve Pearlman has left the stage of Greenwich Village to travel to Israel. The New York Post gave him quite a write-up as he played "his sinister role" in "The Threepenny Opera" for the last time. Here is part of that account: " 'Excuse me if I'm a bit hazy,' he said when questioned about the why of it. 'I had four weekend performances and also shots for typhus, typhoid, tetanus and polio, besides smallpox vaccinations. I'm going for two reasons. First, I want to see the country ... Israel. Second, I want to study the kibbutz as a way of life. I majored in philosophy at Dartmouth and am interested in learning the advantages and disadvantages of various modes of living.' " So Steve has sailed for Haifa and from there was scheduled to be driven to Beit Hashita, near Nazareth.
Chuck Woodhouse, who finished Harvard Law and is practicing in Connecticut, is engaged to Bev Fahrer of Hartford, a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, Toledo, Ohio. Julie Sharp of Cleveland Heights is married to Bill Frazier. Julie went to Kent State University and Bill has his Master's degree from, the University of Virginia. Harry Nutting was an usher. Dave Klein finished Harvard Medical School in 1959 and has recently become engaged to Marilyn Ruth Ditching of Denver, a graduate of the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing.
Tom Porter is at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He plans to be married this summer to Mary Driscoll of Bethesda. Mary is at the College of New Rochelle. Tom used to set the record for cross-country hitch-hiking from Hanover to San Diego, but it looks as if he's concentrating in the East now. Nearby in Alexandria, Va., Ann Jackson, a graduate of Hollins College, is engaged to Ron Post.
Ric Worrell and Tom Gidley were among ten admitted to the Rhode Island Bar at the end of November.
About the time you are reading this, it will be Carnival time in Hanover. After that another big event will be the western tour of the Glee Club, March 17 to April 2. They are traveling to the coast and will be stopping in quite a number of cities, so check to see if yours is one.
