I ran across this passage in William Carroll Hill's "Dartmouth Traditions"; Hill is quoting from the writing of the good Dartmouth Indian and preacher, Samson Occom. "I bought a mare with which to travel to and fro among my Montauk parishioners, but she fell into a quicksand. I purchased another but some rogue stole her from me. The third died of the distemper. The fourth had a colt and then broke her leg, and presently the colt died also, whereupon I gave up the attempt to maintain such luxury and traveled afoot." (You thought you had troubles paying bills and taxes and then contributing to the Alumni Fund!) PhilLangtry is on foot and phone and at the typewriter heading up the class in an effort to raise eleven thousand dollars for the 1965 Alumni Fund Drive. Phil has seventeen regional men: Russ Brace for northern New England; Dick Taylor, Conn, and R. I.;Tom Rosenwald, Westchester County; DonDavidoff, up-state New York; Tim Sears for Pa.; Brad Leonard in the southeastern states; Fen Riley, north central states; JohnYan de Kamp, California; Stu Klapper, Mass.; Dick Rosen, New York City; PaulKrindler, Long Island; Ken Geary, New Jersey; John Parke, Ohio; Em Houck, central states; Tom Fead, western states; and Clem Malin and Doug Keare have Europe. These seventeen strongmen are being backed up by seventy assistants serving as class agents. Phil noted a while ago that John Van de Kamp could use more help in California. Phil has pointed out that the Alumni Fund is supplying the College with one eighth of its annual income. Particular emphasis is being placed by the College on faculty compensation and student financial aid.

Here's a little more on Ahmed Osnian's recent honor. Ahmed is the only student in the United States of twenty students who have been chosen to make their pilgrimage to Mecca as guest of the Muslim League. In addition to fulfilling their religious obligations, these students will participate in conferences on the socio-political and economic problems facing their countries. As Ahmed put it for the News Service: "All Moslems are obligated to make the pilgrimage if they have the health and wealth to do so. I have the health, and now I have the wealth." The Muslim League is paying for Ahmed's trip to Mecca and back to the United States. Ahmed will have a chance to visit his parents for the first time since he came to Dartmouth. His father is Registrar of the Teachers Training Higher Institute in Khartoum, The Sudan. Ahmed will be gone for the spring term and return for the summer term.
