Few members of the Class do not already know of the loss we have sustained in the deaths of Art Ruggles, after a brief illness on January 2, and of Arba Irvin on January 17. The latter had been suffering for several years, and it was because of his illness that he asked to be relieved of the position of Secretary of the Class last September.
Words cannot express our feelings at their going, nor is this the place to make the attempt. The record of their lives and achievements are more properly acclaimed elsewhere. For us this is in the nature of an intimate family matter. We lived, studied and played with these men for four happy years. They were very different. Art was prominent in college affairs. As manager of the football team, he was one of the "big shots" on the campus. Arba was less well known. He never held office. He engaged in no extracurricular activities. But both were alike in that they were respected by everyone. As we look back on those days, there is no one of us who will not say of each of them "There was a man I liked." They were both outstanding in their friendliness. There was nothing snobbish in either of them. They were straightforward and honest. It was a pleasure to be in their company.
These same characteristics they carried with them to the end of their lives. The College is proud of them both. Their communities mourn them and honor their memories for their achievements. The Class rejoices that it had them as members and friends.
