Dartmouth's freshman teams are also moving along in fine fashion. The basketball team won the opener from University of Vermont; but then was upset in a return game with the Catamounts. It defeated the Williams 1962 aggregation, 64-57, 10st to Harvard, and in its most recent encounter overcame a 28-25 halftime deficit to thump Norwich 71-47. Guard Ed Goldstein, forward Bill Shanahan, and Paul Brown have been Dartmouth's top scorers, with guard Bob Brower also looking good. Other top freshman players include center Bob Gimby, Barry Strauch and Bob Meyer.
The Little Green hockey team went undefeated in its first three contests by defeating the Norwich freshmen, Hope High School and Kimball Union Academy, but lost the most recent contest to a strong Northwood School club by a 7-3 score. Bill Blees, Tom Cranna, Mike Parish, Pat Gorman, Stu Johnson, Warren Loomis and Derek Buntain are the top freshman hockey players thus far. Coach Jeremiah expects some help up front from this team but bemoans the lack of a goal tender and defensive depth.
After an opening loss to Colgate, the freshman swimming team rebounded to defeat Andover 52-34. Terry Bentley broke the Andover Pool record to win the 100-yard butterfly for Dartmouth, while Steve Lasser and Charlie Balch teamed up for a one-two punch in the breaststroke event. Jay Pierson and Jeff Urstadt did well in the backstroke and freestyle races, while Chuck Hegeman looked impressive in taking second place in the dive.
In mid-January the freshman squash team opened its season with a disappointing 6-0 loss to a strong Andover team. Phil Meyer, Jim Biggs, Doug Walgren, Bob Eder, Tad Cantril, and John Ryder - playing in that order for Dartmouth - all went down to defeat. Coach Hoehn expected to lose to the more experienced Andover club but admits his disappointment with lack of depth on the current freshman squad.
In the only freshman track meet of the season to date the '62 Dartmouth squad defeated Boston University, 58-44, with Tom Laris setting a new record in the two-mile race (see varsity report). Dan Tompkins finished second behind Laris for the Indians while Dud Hallagan won the 660-yard race and anchored the winning relay team. Nick Jennison captured the mile race, Colin Harley the 50-yard dash, John Holland the pole vault, and Dave Guenther took a first place in the broad jump to account for the majority of Dartmouth points.
