Mr. Quinn presented a paper before the national meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in New Orleans on February 28. The paper, entitled "Planning the Fundamental Research Program," cited the objectives of fundamental research and discussed various approaches for planning research to meet these objectives.

Mr. Prater has been appointed the 1961 New Hampshire State Membership Chairman for the American Accounting Association.

Mr. Olsen participated in the 4th Annual Congress on Administration of the American College of Hospital Administrators in Chicago, February 2-4.

On January 30, Douglas Sprague, John March and William Curley, partners and manager respectively of Arthur Andersen and Company, met with the second-year class in Accounting Valuation and Measurement. Henry Rose, from the IBM Sales and Manufacturing Training Program, and Henry Silviera, Branch Manager, Concord, N. H., met with the Production Management group on January 20 to discuss the IBM Management Operating System for manufacturing.

On February 16, William Copulsky, Assistant to the President, Cryovac Division, W. R. Grace Company, spoke to the Production Management Group on long-range facilities planning in the chemical industry. On February 7 and 8, James A. Hamilton T'23 of James A. Hamilton Associates met with the first- and second-year students to discuss problem solving and decision making in relation to hospital administration, as well as career opportunities in this field. Gwynne Prosser, Director of Personnel for Young & Rubicam, Raymond Berquist T'39, Director of Compensation Administration and Home Office Employee Services, and C. J. Southerton, Manager of Training and Development, Toilet Articles Division of Colgate-Palmolive Company, were the principal participants in a role-playing presentation before both the first- and second-year students on January 26. The presentation was designed to demonstrate various interviewing techniques used by company representatives in recruiting on campus.

Frederick D. Carter Jr., assrstant vice president of the U. S. Trust Company, New York City, spoke twice to students in the investments course on February 24, on setting up and managing portfolios of trust and of management accounts.

Monte J. Gordon, head of the research department of Bache & Company. New York City, conducted two lectures and discussion sessions for students in the investments course on March 2 on security analysis and selection for common stock investment.

Dr. Frank Smith of Lybrand, Ross Bros and Montgomery talked to the first-year class on February 16 on the span of work performed by the certified public accountant and opportunities in that field.

Frank T. Weston D' 36, partner in Arthur Young & Company, and William P. Stowe, father of Allen Stowe T'61, discussed current accounting problems with the second-year class in Accounting Valuation and Measurement.

Alan Shepard T'14 is the father of Alan B. Shepard Jr. who has been chosen as one of the three astronauts - one of whom will be selected to go into space; Al Frey T'22 recently wrote he is joining the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Business; John Parker T'25 has been named a second vice president in the Group Department of the Travelers Insurance Company; Earl Daum T'25 has been elected a vice president of General Motors; RupertThompson '28, chairman of the board of Textron, Inc., has been elected a director of Textron Electronics, Inc., of Providence; BobHarrison T'33 has been appointed assistant to the executive vice president of Glenbrook Laboratories Division, Sterling Drug, Inc.

Bill Greenwood T'38 has been elected vice president of underwriting of the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company of Philadelphia; Dick Gilbert T'39 has accepted a position with the Mead Corporation, Dayton, Ohio; Byron Mansfield T'41, purchasing agent of the J. F. McElwain Company, has been elected to the board of directors of that company; Harris Richardson T'42 has been promoted to vice president of Eaton & Howard, Inc., Boston; Ralph Hersey '46, trust officer of the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company, is conducting a lecture course on "Trust Department Organization" for the Boston chapter of the American Institute of Banking; Bill McElnea T'48 is a partner in the firm of Van Alstyne, Noel and Company, New York City; Alan Jackson T-TH'53 served as co-chairman of the American Management Association Seminar on "Utilizing Scientific and Technical Personnel and Facilities Abroad," held March 13-15 in New York City; Roy Abbott T'53 has been appointed assistant vice president of the Chase Manhattan Bank, New York City; CharlieLyon T'53 married Katherine Sidway Mulford of Little Falls, N. Y., on February 7; Tony Frank T'54 has sent word of the arrival

of a baby girl on February 15; Paul WilsonT'55 received a gold medal from the Massachusetts Society of CPA for placing first in the May i960 CPA examination. He is employed by Arthur Andersen & Company in Boston as are two other Massachusetts medal winners, Charlie Morrison T'55 ari and JackNewton T'54; Ron Kabot T'60 was recently married to Barbara A. Sherwin of Westwood, Calif.; Pete Ottowitz T'60 has announced his engagement to Consuelo Therese De Leon of West Islip, N. Y
