One of the nice things about my spring is the opportunity to sit behind Frank Logan's desk for a few hours of substitute Admissions interviewing every week or so. I'm there not specifically because Frank is overworked and needs to be spelled now and then, although Admissions does put in an impressive work schedule this time of year, but because this is their "saltmines season. (That's Admissions staff slang for "let's get off by ourselves, fellows, and see what we can do about getting a class for next September.")

But getting back to Logan's desk. It s not only pleasant to sit in an office with a real fireplace and luncheon aromas from neighboring Thayer Hall, but also to talk to these kids. Last Wednesday, for instance, I had a chance to talk with boys from California, Rhode Island, lowa and Ohio. All nice kids, too. I'd hate to have to pick a class when there are three or four thousand applicants like these boys. It's always a job to convince them that I have absolutely nothing to do with getting a boy into the College and to get them to relax and talk about themselves. Perhaps if I did more of this I wouldn'i get such a kick out of it, but I do — I' m delighted to share in the enthusiasm these boys are experiencing at their first sight of the College. At times it's a little sad too - even with my limited knowledge of what goes into the selecting of a Dartmouth class. There are some instances where I can spot the odds at 1,000 to 1 against a kid's chances in today's competition.

I've heard a number of alumni remark jokingly that they'd never make the grade in today's Admissions competition. They really don't mean this at all. But it does emphasize the case. I wonder....

Class prexy Bernie Lewis and his wife Suzanne are now proud parents of a young man, Philip Joel Lewis, born on March 5. Charlie and Rosemary Clough had their first child, a little girl, Martha Stevens, on February 21. Charlie's assistant treasurer of the Nashua Corporation (N. H.).

I didn't mean this to become the "Bankers' Special," but it may turn out that way. Brock Lewis has been elected assistant trust officer for the Fidelity Union Trust Co. in Newark, N. J. He and Susan have three young ones, Julianna, Christopher and Josiah. Another assistant vice president in the class banking ranks is George "Joe" Scully, an officer for the Casco Bank and Trust Co. Now that we have assured you of the financial position of the nation, let's turn to other fields; education, for instance. Jim McComiskey teaches English at Tantesqua High School in Massachusetts. George Clendon is down in Greensboro, N. C., as a chemicals salesman for Pfister Southern, Inc.

I mentioned Si Grolnick earlier but didn't stop long enough to report that Dr. Si is junior psychiatrist for the Kings County Hospital. He and Barbara have two children, Debby and Wendy. Ned Sullivan works for the government down in the nation's capital — at least he did last November. I haven't heard since January 20. I had the pleasure of seeing Rog Phillips among others during my recent Alumni Fund visits to New York and Boston. Rog is with the law firm of Fish, Richardson and Neave, and he and Judith have two boys, Roger and James. Buck Linman is a partner, secretary and treasurer for the Wayzata (Minn.) Sheet Metal Co. And don't forget old Rosie and his hardworking crew of agents. They'd sure like to see your BIG GREEN (but a check will do, too). More, more, more in the big June issue.
