THREE PLEASANT SURPRISES OF THE PAST MONTH

(1) During my Capital Gifts Campaign traveling last week I entered the Hartford, Conn., office of an alumnus named Charles Rice '23, and was delighted to find Ted Rice there too. Ted and Pauline, and their two daughters, are living in Simsbury, Conn., and Ted is with his father in business. Ted's Dad is heading up the College's Special Gifts Program in Hartford this spring.

(2) Dave Edson and I, each with a daughter named Susan on a sled, were headed for Putnam's for the Sunday Times during the big snow recently (33 inches) when we met Jack Barclay at the Hanover Inn Corner. Jack was stopping in Hanover while on a business trip in the East.

(3) A member of the professional fund raising firm, advising the College in the current campaign, was telling me about a Dartmouth man who married his niece. The Dartmouth man turned out to be Ted Myers who is now living in Longmeadow, Mass., with his wife Lisa and daughter Elizabeth. Ted's in sales work with Monsanto Chem- ical Co.

(4) An enthusiastic group of class members was on hand for the Hopkins Dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. On hand were Mr. and Mrs. Dek Davidson, Nels Ehringer, Bob Jelley, Chuck Keenan, Bart Lombardi and his fiancee, Rog Malkin, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Mandel, Randy Nubel and Tony Trowbridge.

BIG EVENTS IN THE LIVES OF '52s

Roy and Shirley Wikstrom now have three daughters. The newest, Jennifer Anne, was born on December 30 — just in time for the Income Tax deduction. Karen and Chrysa are the older

Sid Schneck and Sallydene Roos were wed on December 22, in Chicago. The bride is now working toward her Master's degree at Columbia. The engagement of Bart Lombardi and Phoebe Grassman was recently reported in the newspapers. Phoebe is an alumna of Ohio Wesleyan University. Dr. Marty Yarvis and Miss Louise Lee Dunn were married in Woodmere, L.I., N.Y., on February 3. The bride is a Tufts graduate and is now director of pediatric recreation at Metropolitan Hospital in New York.

Norm Jeavons received his law degree from Western Reserve University and has taken a job with the law firm of Baker, Hostetler & Patterson in Cleveland. Bill Price was advised by the Board of Registration of Certified Public Accountants in Massachusetts that he had passed all parts of the CPA examination. Bob Millhouse is finishing his residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. He and Ev will be spending the next two years with the Air Force. Bob Holmes now has three boys, Bobby, Andy and Billy, who was born last May. Bob and Lois live in Morristown, N.J., and Bob is with IBM. Charlie Blakemore is with the advertising agency of Foote, Cone & Belding in Chicago. He and Kathy and the family make their home in Evanston, Ill.

I don't intend to make a habit of quoting letters in full (there are too many items to report), but the following letter from KenGallant seemed to warrant making it the exception:

I left the ranks of bachelorhood last Christmas when I became engaged to Countess Helena de Gaston Maurey, a charming young lady of Belgian and Greek ancestry. The wedding is to take place in late June on the French Riviera.

After the honeymoon, we are returning to New York to live in my present quarters (ed. - Penthouse A, 155 East 71st Street). Helena, who attended the Pierce School in Athens, is going to continue her studies in New York. This may be a bit difficult as my business requires me to travel almost six months a year.

For the past three years, I have been a publicist for the world of haute couture. This entails a combination of public relations, publicity, salesmanship, diplomacy and a perpetual flow of gin. I guess I can best be described as a liaison between some of the better-known designers and manufacturers and the heroines of cafe society, the silver screen and international suburbia. It is my job to see that the latter are decked out in our garbs during their public appearances.

In the case of international suburbia, tact and salesmanship are required; in the case of cafe society, publicity and photographs are necessary; and for the movie queens, a combination of flattery and a few creations gratis. Sandwiched in between this rat race are the Paris showings, the charity shows for the last of the Western Hemisphere's big spenders, department store promotions, television and newsreel coverage and dozens of dull cocktail parties to "butter up" the press and' magazine people.
