As winter tightens its grip on the Hanover Plain, Dartmouth athletic hopes continue to rise and fall on every front. Except for one day, however, when all but one team recorded a victory, it has been a long winter. And as this is written, March seems a long way off.
That one day of glory for Indian athletes came on January 6, when all but the squash team drank deeply of the fountain of victory. The basketball team demonstrated unusual offensive skill as it outlasted Harvard, 61-55; the hockey team came from behind in a miracle finish to beat Yale in overtime, 6-5; the track team outdistanced Boston University, 58-51; the wrestlers defeated W.P.I., 17-8, and the swimmers, the only team on the road, sank Brown, 48-47.
The following weekend saw just the reverse as all the teams, except squash and wrestling, were beaten. It should be said, however, that the majority of the defeats were administered by some of the better teams in the Ivy League: Harvard in hockey and swimming, and Cornell in track and basketball. But the handwriting is still on the wall that the Big Green teams are in for a rough winter unless they perform as they did on January 6.
Let's take a look at that banner weekend when the Indians could do no wrong and those all-important breaks were written in green.
