Ham Hankins is glad to be back in harness again - his new position is Manager of Technical Services for Lockheed Aircraft Service at Idlewild Airport. He is in charge of contracts, engineering, quality control and flight operations. His daughter, Anne, Skidmore '61, is ecstatic over her Peace Corps work in the Philippines. It's encouraging to hear that she thinks the youth of America are far more effective in the fight against communism than even the Russians expected. The Hankins live in Franklin Lakes, N. J., where Ham is serving his second term as mayor.
Chet Kellogg has been promoted to Executive Vice President of the Alfred M. Best Co., Inc., New York publishing firm. In addition to taking on greater responsibilities, he will continue as Managing Editor of their many insurance magazines. He joined the company in 1929, was elected a vice president in 1948 and a director in 1953.
Chet is a director of several other corporations and the National State Bank, Elizabeth, N. J. He is also an officer of the Drug and Chemical Club, New York, and of the Hawthorne Park Club, Sparta, N. J., and is on the Board of Electors of the Insurance Hall of Fame. Chet and Alice live in Westfield, N. J., and have three sons and two grandchildren.
Ralph Church was elected Vice President and General Counsel of the Equitable Life Insurance Company of lowa at the 95th annual meeting of the trustees in Des Moines on February 9. After graduation from Harvard Law School, Ralph became associated with P. M. Henry, Counsel Emeritus for the Equitable, in the legal firm of Henry and Henry. In 1948 he was named counsel for the company and in 1959 was elected General Counsel.
Lane Dwinell of Lebanon, former Governor of New Hampshire, has been elected to the Alumni Council for the next year as a regional representative of the Dartmouth clubs in the New England states. A clipping from the Valley News contains a front page picture of Lane, the co-chairmen of the Dartmouth Cosmopolitan Club and Prof. Herb Sensenig, club advisor. Lane had just spoken to the club on his experience as Assistant Secretary of State for Administration under President Eisenhower.
Pete Bennett got his picture in the paper on his appointment as New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. manager in Montclair, N. J.
Our clipping service also provided a picture of Bob Clark from the Springfield Union announcing his appointment as head of the Sales Division of the Strathmore Paper Co. Bob joined the company in 1929 on graduation from the Tuck School.
Ed Atkinson, formerly vice president of the Harry M. Miller advertising agency in Columbus, Ohio, has started his own agency - Atkinson Advertising, 1500 West Third Ave., Columbus.
Jack Goodnow, former chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, has formed the law firm of Goodnow, Arwe and Ayer, 45 Roxbury St., Keene. Among his many distinctions is the fact that he was the first '28 grandfather!
Jack and Cornie Herpel finally pried themselves away from the New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. and Cornie's booming decorator business for a long-planned vacation in Europe. They left April 17 and will return May 23 on the "SS France" just in time to rest up before coming to the 35th reunion. They plan to spend most of their time in southern England, but will be in London four days, Holland two days, and Paris two days just before sailing for home.
Variety Club Tent No. 1 honored FredBurleigh at a special program in Pittsburgh February 15 for having contributed so much to the success of the theater in Pittsburgh and for having started many aspiring actors and actresses on their way to fame. Fred became director of the Pittsburgh Playhouse in 1937 and has been there ever since, except for three years during World War II when he served in the South Pacific. After the war he was appointed producer of the three-theater operation.
Johnny Lawrence is a candidate for the school committee in Wareham, Mass., where he and Barbara live with their two children, one a senior at Tabor Academy. Johnny is assistant to the controller of New England Tel. & Tel. in Boston.
Attorney Ken Graf of Manchester, N. H., is secretary of Cott Bottling Co. of New England, Inc., which recently purchased the Cliquot Club Co. of Millis, Mass., for about $1 million.
George Pitts and his son, Robert, stopped in for a brief visit with us on his way back to Jamestown, N. Y., from New York. Frances stayed on in New York to help their daughter Mary with their newly-arrived second grandchild. Their other daughter, Martha, is attending Hiram College in Ohio; Robert is studying art in New York.
