This season's highlight was the third annual Yale-Dartmouth Rugby Match, held Sunday, April 29, under the sponsorship of the Dartmouth Club of Hartford. Attendance this year was a record 2,000 - and to make a fine event practically perfect, Dartmouth pounded out an 11-to-3 win. The growing popularity of these contests is a source of particular gratification to the Hartford Club, since our efforts (and those of the local Yale Alumni Club) have been responsible for the introduction of Rugby to the Greater Hartford area. A trophy that is now known as the "Hartford Cup" was provided for last year's game and has since been made a permanent annual award. Since Dartmouth took the cup back to Hanover last year, Yale was particularly determined to even the honors in 1962 - and in view of the Blue's recent clean sweep of the South, they seemed to have a good chance of pulling this off. Dartmouth, however, was tuned to perfect playing pitch by its tour of Ireland, and the cup went North for the second consecutive year.
Credit for the efficient organization and execution of this year's match arrangements go to Sherry Marchant '50 and Vice Chairman Dick Watson '59 - and to their assistants: Wells Langbehn '59, Walt Lasher '52,Ray Woolson '55, Sax Zieman '35, DavePayne '58, Bill Davis '49, Al Collins '53,Cul Modisette '50, Ted Rice '52, PaulStumpf '54 and Bob Richman '39.
Another noteworthy event on our Spring Activities Program was our regular May Luncheon Meeting at which Trumbull Huntington '42, head of the Hartford Book Store, presented a talk on, "Why Books Should Not Be Banned." In view of the well-known recent furor over "Tropic of Cancer" and "The Carpetbaggers," this was an exceptionally timely and interesting subject.
