Bringing its year to a close with a burst of activity, the Dartmouth Club of Hartford hosted President John Dickey at an informal dessert-and-colfee meeting on April 7. Attended by approximately 150 enthusiastic alumni and friends, the affair was held in the magnificent "grand hall" of Avon Old Farms School, an exact replica of feudal England's baronial halls. Amid banked flags of the world, President Dickey delivered an informal, stirring report on the College, its purpose, and its methods to an enthralled audience. Nort Vergien '47 was responsible for the successful affair.
A short annual meeting was held, and officers for the coming year elected: President, Webb Gault '50; Vice Presidents, John Day'47 and Bud Walls '38; Secretary, BrintSchorer '36; Treasurer, Allen Collins '53; Assistant Secretary, Russ Brignano '57; Assistant Treasurer, Charlie Russell '51.
Hard on the heels of the Dickey meeting, Hartford sponsored the first in a series of Yale-Dartmouth Rugby matches at the Farmington Valley Polo Club on April 16. Interest ran high in the affair, and approximately 1500 people turned out for an afternoon of picnicking, rooting and learning, and saw Dartmouth triumph 11-5. Under the direction of retiring club president Cul Modisette '50, goal posts were erected, the field surveyed and lined, a tent raised, caterers lined up, and the press recruited. Bob Hunt'47, John Day '47, Hap Bush '44, and Al Mc-Allister '48 were instrumental in ironing out the myriad details, while Sax Zieman '35 lined up advertisers for a program. A bagpipe band paraded, the sun shone, dogs frolicked, small boys ate too much ice cream, and the afternoon was an unqualified success.
Winding up the year's events, the annual outing was held June 15 at the Farmington Valley Polo Club. Under the direction of Page Thompson '53, more beer, skittles, hamburg and hot dogs than have been seen in many a moon were assembled and cooked. Russ Brignano '57 worked up his appetite by teaching the attendant children the proper way to hit a softball from the front of Parkhurst to the steps of Webster. Properly satiated and awash with beer, participants straggled off with the approaching darkness, bringing to a close a successful year. Planning has started for the new year to which we are all looking forward.
