CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

IHIS past July, at the National Conference of the American Alumni Council, Dartmouth College was awarded the "Möbius strip" trophy, shown on the cover of this report, and a check of $5,000, representing the Grand Award by the Council and the U. S. Steel Foundation for "sustained performance in alumni support." More than 300 colleges, universities and schools were entered in the competition to recognize "distinguished achievement in the development of alumni support," and Dartmouth's first place award signified the Council's recognition of the superb achievements by Dartmouth men in rebuilding our annual Alumni Fund to well above the million-dollar level after the Capital Gifts Campaign.

Let us be clear that this award was based on our 1962 Campaign results and those immediately preceding it, not on the records and accomplishments which our 1963 Campaign produced. The award, joined with the unique results of our 1963 effort, climaxed what President Dickey has already hailed as "an historic year" in the life of the College.

Our 49th annual Fund Campaign, ending June 30, saw a record total of $1,378,947 contributed by 20,972 alumni, parents and friends. This total exceeded the 1963 goal of $1,250,000 by $128,000 and was $163,000 more than we received in the 1962 effort. Our over-all contributor total was slightly below the 1962 figure, but that year some 1,400 alumni received credit because of Capital Campaign pledge payments, whereas no credits were given in 1963. Our alumni participation percentage was also down slightly, from 69.0% in 1962 to 67.2% this year — also reflecting the fact that contributor credits were given in 1962 but not in 1963 — but this still kept Dartmouth at the top among all major college and university funds on participation.

This was my first year as Alumni Fund Chairman. I never will forget the realization that gradually came to me as the Campaign developed of what a truly significant resource our Alumni Fund represents for Dartmouth, and indeed, for higher education in general. Over ten percent of our entire alumni body, some 3,400 men in all, worked for the 1963 Fund as Head Agents, Class Agents or in their capacities as Class Officers and Newsletter Editors. Another Ioo alumni assisted with a fall regional program for advanced gifts in a dozen major alumni centers across the nation. Nine other men worked closely with me on your Alumni Fund Committee, meeting during the year to make certain that the Fund was guided well and was continuing to maintain the great traditions which have been its strength over the past half century.

The names of many of our key Fund workers — the Fund Committee, Head Agents, Regional Chairmen and Newsletter Editors — are listed elsewhere in this report along with the results achieved by each class and Honor Rolls recognizing outstanding achievements in certain areas.

Such listings and statistics are at best the bare skeleton, and behind each name, behind each figure, stand a host of Dartmouth men who gave unstintingly of their time, thought, and resources to make possible the really great success of our 1963 Campaign.

The College and the Fund Committee extend their profound appreciation to these alumni and to all others whose annual gifts are reflected in this report.

While the Dartmouth Fund is a unified Campaign it is important to realize that the over-all results reflect the success of the individual class campaigns, mounted under class leadership and directed by the Head Agent of each class. It is this class leadership, class organization and class spirit which make our achievements possible.

This year, 42 of 60 classes with assigned dollar goals set new class records in total dollars raised while 46 classes reached or exceeded their assigned dollar quotas. My own Class of 1925, I am happy to report, under the leadership of Larry Leavitt, established an all-time record by raising the largest amount ever in the Fund by a Dartmouth class, $57,581, winning its Green Derby competition and also the Davis Trophy. The Class of 1938, as part of its 25 th Year Class Gift program, also went over the $50,000 level with a total of $53,863. Four other classes raised amounts in excess of $40,000. Bill Cusack stepped in to take over the Class of 1927 reins after the untimely death of Andy Rankin, and the Class of 1927 raised $45,318. Another new Head Agent, Ed Chinlund, directed the Class of 1929 to a total of $41,848, while 1926, under Herm Trefethen, raised $40,913, and the Class of 1923, led by Lou Wilcox, celebrated its 40th reunion with a $40,689 total.

On the contributor side, 29 classes achieved 100% or better on participation, while 22 classes chalked up participation records and five classes reached new contributor totals. The Class of 1953, directed by new Head Agent Ed Condit, had the largest contributor total with 565 donors, with the Class of 1954, led by John Feldman, in second place with 523 donors. The Class of 1950, John Swenson, and the Class of 1957, Tom Schwarz, each had 514 donors.

A slightly revised method of calculating class dollar goals resulted in one of the closest Green Derby races in history for all eight groups. Group I (Classes 1903-1912) was won by the Class of 1904, Charles I. Lampee, Head Agent; Group II (Classes 1913-1919) by 1915, Harold H. Lounsberry, Group III (Classes 1920—1926) by 1925, Laurence G. Leavitt; Group IV (Classes 1927-1933) by 1927, William C. Cusack; Group V (Classes 1934-1941) by 1940, John B. Moore; Group VI (Classes 1942-1948) by 1943, George B. Munroe; Group VII (Classes 1949-1955) by 1953, Edward M. Condit, Jr.; and Group VIII (Classes 1956-1962) by the Class of 1956, Leonard J. Clark, Jr.

Continuing emphasis by many classes on the Century Clubs ($100 and up donors) enabled nine classes to produce clubs with more than 100 members each. The Class of 1925 continued to lead in this field with 150 Century Club donors, while 1928 and 1929 each had 114 members.

Another significant campaign within our 1963 Alumni Fund program was that conducted among Dartmouth parents of undergraduates and recent graduates by a 143-member Parents Committee headed by Ralph Becker of Washington, D. C.,. parent of a Dartmouth junior. This effort produced $45,900 in gifts from 1,192 parent donors — a remarkably fine result.

A third aspect of our 1963 Fund program was the fall regional effort for advanced gifts and pledges conducted by a 100-member alumni committee in some fifteen major cities across the nation. This effort was instrumental in raising $336,000 in advanced gifts and pledges before the April I opening date and gave us a starting edge of $120,000 over 1962 as the Campaign got underway.

This same regional program, combined with class efforts in the spring, also resulted in a very heartening increase in the number of major gifts ($1,000 and up) achieved by our 1963 Campaign. This year the Fund had 184 contributions in the $1,000 to $10,000 range, totaling $323,812 — an increase of $31,000 and 14 donors over 1962.

Congratulations are also in order for the Class of 1938. Led by co-chairmen Art Soule and Bud "Walls, the Class conducted a 25th Year Class Gift Campaign which raised $125,000 in gifts and pledges during the final year to bring their over-all 25-year giving total to $512,600 — third largest by a 25th Year Class.

As this report nears the end it is my sad duty to report on the passing of five Head Agents during the period of our 1963 Alumni Fund Campaign—Philip S. Marden 1894, Walter P. Rankin 1900, Fletcher A. Hatch 1905, Benjamin H. Dudley 1909, and Andrew M. Rankin 1927. To the families of these devoted Dartmouth leaders the sympathies and condolences of the entire Dartmouth fellowship are extended.

As I reported these historic 1963 results to our Class Agents last July I wrote in part: "To each of you I send the sincere thanks and congratulations of your College, your Fund Committee and your Fund Chairman for a job well done. We can be justifiably proud of the unstinting service and thoughtful dedication behind our 1963 accomplishments. Your efforts continue the proud traditions of past Fund Campaigns and create new strengths upon which to draw as we move into our 50th Anniversary Fund Campaign next year."

I now share these words with all Dartmouth men, for they are applicable to all. I look forward with great confidence to our 50th Anniversary Campaign. I know that it is more than reasonable to hope that a year from now our report to you will again reflect the high esteem which Dartmouth men hold for their College and its Alumni Fund.
