THE DANA Biomedical Library, the newest addition to the Gilman Biomedical Center at the College, was formally dedicated at ceremonies held in the Library's main reception area on Friday, October 11.
Witnessing the formal dedication were members of the Board of Trustees, faculty from the Medical School and the Biological Sciences Department, the Library staff, members of the College administration and other special guests, including Trustee Emeritus Albert Bradley '15, a personal friend of the donor of the Library.
President John Sloan Dickey '29 presided at the ceremony which began with an Invocation given by the Reverend George H. Kalbfleisch, director of undergraduate religious life.
Mr. Dickey in his opening remarks noted that the "hyphenated age" of science was giving way to a new period of maturity and understanding of the relationships among scientific disciplines. He went on to say that "the possibilities of unity (among the sciences) are testified to by this library. This library will serve .. . the basic medical scientists .. . the men engaged in the training of men for the practice of medicine .. . the practitioners on the front lines of human sickness, and the men they are training in the Hitchcock Clinic."
"There is a witness here of unity in learning, in the use of learning which is about as tangible, about as dramatic, as any field that I could call to mind. More is being done here than, simply providing a new library."
Richard W. Morin '24, Librarian of the College, began his remarks by noting that "Mr. Dana was not only the source of benefaction which made (the Library) possible, but also had a very direct role in the planning of the structure." President Dickey in later remarks introducing Mr. Dana elaborated on Mr. Dana's interest and concern in the building from concept through blueprints to the completion of construction.
Dr. Henry W. Littlefield, vice president of the Charles A. Dana Foundation and president of the University of Bridgeport, Medical School Dean Gilbert H. Mudge, and Prof. John H. Copenhaver Jr. '46 also spoke.
The final speaker on the program was Mr. Dana of Wilton, Conn, and New York City, and founder of the foundation which gave $400,000 toward construction of the library. A Columbia graduate, Mr. Dana is chairman of the board of the Dana Corporation of Toledo, Ohio, and is a director of many other industrial corporations. Mr. Dana spoke of his special interest in education and in providing the facilities to make good education possible, noting in conclusion that he had enjoyed his trips to Dartmouth in connection with the construction of the building that has his name and that he hoped to come back frequently to watch the Biomedical Center and the College grow.
