EDITOR'S NOTE: Since the arrival of the 1927 class notes word has been received of the death on March 8 of Andrew M. Rankin, Class Agent.

We have the very sad news, for those of you who haven't as yet heard, of the sudden death of Josh Davis. See the obit column for details of his very full life. Josh, through his college days, his career afterwards, his activity and devotion and his all-pervading enthusiasm and energy for Class and College, has been Mr. '27. The shock at his passing is deep and the loss irreparable.

The mails bring a note from Rog Braman that Ed Baker is in Overbrook Hospital, Summit, N.J., recovering from a heart attack suffered in February. Called Ruth, Ed's wife, and find that he is coming along quite well. Ruth came down with pneumonia after the Penn game and finally had to go to Florida. Ed went along for a much-needed rest for himself only to be called back after four days by his pressing duties as town solicitor plus his private practice. It was shortly after that he was stricken. He will be home in another few weeks and, we all hope, back on his feet soon.

Coggy Broer and Sue off to San Juan, then a week at St. Kitts for a little sun and beachcombing, followed by another week at St. Croix also on the beach. After three days in Haiti they are expected home around March 20. All of this reported while looking out on the latest fall of snow!

The last month or so has been Vice Presidential month for '27. Ken Ballantyne was recently elected vice president of Kidder Peabody & Co. Ken has been with them for 30 years and is with their Institutional Sales Department. The Mamaroneck Times recently ran a handsome picture with the correct name Alan McK. Welty over a headline "Bank Names Alan Welby to V.P. Post." But Welby or Welty, it's '27's Al and he is a new V.P. of First National City Bank in charge of the Twenty-Eighth Street Branch.

Pleased to get signs of Southeastern Class activity. Joe Hardin, regional chairman, was circularizing all '27ers in Florida about the alumni dinner in Miami with President Dickey as guest. Looking forward to a report from Joe on the '27ers in attendance. Joe incidentally indicates he would like a place in New England as an escape from Florida summers. This is a little reverse English. Incidentally is there any law against a class secretary doing a little real estating via these columns?

A belated inclusion here that Ken andRuth Murray had seen Chuck and MarieBaker over the holidays. The Bakers have two lovely daughters in New York and thus get to the City frequently. Chuck is still the energetic barrister of Painesville, Ohio. KenMurray incidentally is now at 80 Pine Street, NYC, practicing his patent and trademark law.

Woody Burgert responds to a happy birthday note with word that in addition to vice presidential duties at Harris Trust, he and his winsome wife play golf six months a year, curl for five, and can't find anything to do in April! The Burgert son Woodward Jr. has had brilliant careers at Shattuck School, Williams, and now is finishing with a flourish at Cornell Medical College in New York. A chip off the old Woody? (I know, but it's been a long hard winter.)

Dr. John W. Machen (Jack) sends news on the Machen family. Jack is reunioning with his 30-year medical class at Georgetown University this year. Daughter Joan, a graduate nurse, was married on December 29, 1962, to Ens. Joseph F. Corcoran, U.S. Naval Academy '62, and is navy wifing in Norfolk, Va. Jack's eldest daughter graduated from Middlebury in '60 and then joined the Army, spending two years in Texas studying physical therapy. She is a Ist Lt. in the U.S. Army Reserve and on the staff of the Montebello State Hospital in Baltimore. Jack says, while he missed the 35th, that Jim Picken is to reserve space for the 40th. Understand incidentally that Jim is taking over 40th responsibilities in true coaching form, selecting his team and calling for early practice.

Had a phone call from neighbor nutmegger Harry Milner expressing great sadness over the passing of Jack Jones, his roommate. Harry's wife was off on a seventeen-day Europe jaunt and would be home just in time to go to the island of Tobago where they will spend the month of March, their fifth visit. Note for next class directory: Let's include winter addresses as well as permanent residences, as more and more seem to want sun when we've got only snow up here.

I am sending along to Mike Choukas a fine letter from Fen-min Tung from Hong Kong, which I hope he will print in full. It contains a cordial invitation to visit Hong Kong, reports a Dartmouth dinner in January honoring the football team, and that his son Yuen-liang Tung is an applicant for next fall's freshman class. The picture of Fen-min and his son was taken in front of Queen's College where Yuen-liang is a Form V student.

You Massachusetts '27ers who have a little time on your hands and would like to do a labor of love job for '27 should volunteer your services to Les Battin. Les will undertake the class archivist assignment if he can count on assistance. Example of job: DoaneArnold will donate full collection of ALUMNI MAGAZINES from which some scissors artist might clip all '27 class notes. A set of Daily Dartmouths are also available. Scrapbook editors and artists, call Les.

Fen-Min Tung '27 of Hong Kong and hisson Yuen-liang Tung who is an applicantfor admission to the College.
