On February 16 two representatives of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Long Island traveled to Hanover to honor President Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins '01 with a Tomahawk Award. Michael R. Pender '47, president, and Leonard Harrison '34, vice president, made the presentation of the tenth special Tomahawk Award in a ceremony at Mr. Hopkins' home.

The Tomahawk is awarded periodically by the Long Island Association to men who have made outstanding contributions to Dartmouth College. The award is not restricted to alumni and two of the recipients have not been alumni members. A list of the holders of the Tomahawk includes: John Sloan Dickey '29, Robert Blackman, Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36, William Coulson '18h, Bill Cunningham '19, Sidney C. Hayward '26, Harvey P. Hood '18, Myles J. Lane '28, and Robert A. Rolfe '31.

The Tomahawk Award has reached its present form through a long process of evolution. About 25 years ago, before the Association was formed, a group of Long Island alumni met regularly to enjoy Dartmouth fellowship. They used a wooden tomahawk as a gavel. This original gavel, as well as all subsequent Tomahawks, was fabricated by Arthur B. Keleher '27. After the Association was formally constituted in 1939, the Tomahawk Award was conceived as a means of showing appreciation to retiring club presidents. To date thirteen past presidents have been so honored. At the end of World War II, the Long Island Association decided to institute a program to honor some of the outstanding men who have served Dartmouth College. It was agreed that special Tomahawks would be prepared for this purpose.

The Tomahawk itself is a two-piece wooden hatchet tied together by a leather thong. It has three silver ornaments: a college seal on the handle, a silver Indian head on the upper portion of the blade, and a silver plaque, inscribed with the name of the award, the recipient and the date, on the blade.
