MAY 1963 HARRY B. JOHNSON, CHARLES I. LAMPEE

Today, as I write my May notes on March 27, it has been a hot day, 85°. Rosy and Ellen are starting north to North Stratford, N.H., shortly. The Robinsons for South Dartmouth, Mass.; The Hobbs. for Maiden, Mass.; The Websters for Randolph, Vt.; The Edgerlys for Manchester, N.H. This leaves Kid Vail, Jack Sanderson, Ike Maynard, and the Johnsons in Florida for the hot summer. We shall be looking for your return again next winter.

Today the Websters dropped in to say "Hello" on their way to St. Petersburg. Wonderful to see them again. They get around. Brace and Mrs. Sanborn are vacationing in Amsterdam, The Netherlands making their headquarters in The Amsterdam Hilton in Amsterdam and visiting the surrounding countryside.

Word reached me this month from a good neighbor of Dr. Leroy B. Vail that the "Kid" had recently suffered a stroke at his home in St. Petersburg, Fla. Your Secretary called Mrs. Vail by telephone and found the Dr. was resting comfortably and on the mend. Write to him, he would be glad to hear from you.

Mrs. Ann Manning, Ann to us, has just sent to me a copy of a wonderful tribute to our Pat Manning from President Kennedy. It reads as follows: "The Uriited States of America honors the memory of Patrick John Manning and this certificate is awarded by a grateful nation in recognition of his devoted and selfless concentration to the Service of Mankind in the Armed Forces of the United States." Signed - John F. Kennedy, President, The White House, Washington, D.C." A Salute to Captain Pat Manning's memory by all his classmates.

The Walkers are at Tucson until May, enjoying the warm Arizona sunshine. Mrs. Harrie Muchemore of DeRary, Fla., called on the Johnsons recently. We were so happy to see and have a visit with her. Mother of four and grandmother of sixteen; one of her sons was John L. Muchemore Class of 1943.

Recently the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and surrounding area held a big Dartmouth dinner at the Gulf and Bay Club, Sarasota, Fla. 192 Dartmouth men and wives attended. Among those present were Hobbs, Hinmans, Robinsons and Websters of 1904. President Dickey was the guest speaker.

Short note from Captain Hardy from Seattle, Wash. The Captain was well and enjoys reading 1904 notes of all the boys. Nice to hear from you Hat, 3000 miles away. Free advice to the aged: Note from Dr. Jimmie Brotherhood - just sitting down to luncheon; eggs and milk, no Granddad, limited smoking. Zeta takes good care of Jimmie. Note from my Boston correspondent. Ralph Sexton, he writes: Carl cheerful at home with wonderful courage during his long illness. Squid gets down to dinner each evening, walks —no sliding down the banister. Pen Mower still in nursing home in Westwood, Mass., unchanged in health.

Don't forget a round-up of the class on June 16th. Our 59th. Rosy Hinman will substitute for Beck Johnson at the Tomb of Eleazar Wheelock just at midnight by the Dartmouth clock on Saturday night. Potential attendants are: Hinman, Webster, Terrien, Walker, Matt, Hobbs, Sexton, Davis, Doonan, Witham, and Wing. The Secretary has word from Eleazer that a gallon of New England rum will be awarded to each man in attendance. That rum, now nearly 200 years old - ought to be good and worth going after.

This past month we have been so happy to have calls at our home from several 1908 men. The Lowes of Cleveland, Ohio; the Lanphears of Cheshire, Conn.; the Thompsons from Yonkers, N.Y.; and of course, the big man of the Treadways Hotels - Mr. Treadway, Larry himself. All still able to play a fair game of Shuffleboard. It was wonderful to see them and Mrs. Martha Brown, the wife of our great friend who passed away two years ago, Harold D. Brown, '14. Martha gave Sally a wonderful birthday party. March 28. She won't let me tell you how old she is and I don't really know myself, and the Dows of 1902 sent her a nice birthday remembrance. Our lives have been enriched by the wonderful Dartmouth fellowship we have been privileged to share with so many wonderful men and women.

Second and important. Don't forget to back up Squid, our wonderful Alumni Fund Secretary for 23 years. Let's all chip-in and help him make our quota.

Lastly, Sally joins Beck in best wishes for your health and good cheer. Write your Secretary, Cheerio.
