From Pasadena comes this appreciated note from Mrs. Adeline M. Adams, widow of our beloved classmate, the great astronomer, Walter S. Adams, "Pete". "Walter had a deep interest in and affection for Dartmouth College, but we have lived too far away to visit often. In fact Dr. Fred Lord is the only living member of your Class whom I know. I have little news for you. I hope to see Mabel (Mrs. Albert) Smith this summer. She has sold her home in Winnetka and, with her daughter, came to California to be near her grandson and his family, located in Barstow until October. Our oldest son, Edmund, has two daughters, is an investment analyst. John, an architect, has a daughter and a son (eleven months old) Walter Ewing Adams. Best wishes for the 65th Anniversary." Mrs. Smith is the widow of our classmate, Albert Smith.
David D. Hewes '31, Ph.D. son of "Little Indian", Laurence I. Hewes, famous road builder, writes from Bakersfield, Calif., in part: that his mother, authoress Agnes Hewes, whose letter was one of the first received and published in 1961, is now 90 and in a nursing home, and adds "I know if she were able she would send you and your fellow classmates warm greetings and wishes for a successful and happy reunion this next June. And I as a son of one of your classmates, and a member of the Class of 1931, do wish you a happy and memorable reunion."
Dear Anna Nolan writes from Middleboro, Mass., this humorously plaintive Easter greeting: "Have been quite sick since Christmas with 'flu' virus with bronchitis. Took lots of strength. 'Only the good die young' so I'm still here. Shall answer your different letters in a few days. Hope all are well." Gertrude sends you her deepest sympathy from a like experience. The Class will be waiting for you in June. It will welcome also Miss Alice K. Lucey, daughter of Patrick Joseph Lucey, at the Roundup.
Fred Lord and Jeanne are back in Hanover and he has courageously agreed to make the final arrangements on the spot for the Roundup. Headquarters at the Inn. Luncheon in the Drake Room in Hopkins Center. Place and time of Class Dinner as yet undecided, due to fact that College now holds an Alumni Dinner at Thayer Hall at night on Saturday.
Hats off to Oscar Tabor for his work as Class Agent for the Alumni Fund, and to the '98 women whose many memorial gifts have already doubled last year's receipts.
