"Monty"! What memories are awakened when we think of Charles Montgomery! His sharp wit; his interest in everything concerning the College and the Class. His widow, Isabelle, who married Mr. Geo. J. Daniell, and is again widowed, sends this responsive and reminiscent letter from Yonkers, N. Y.:
I am so sorry that I did not receive your letter under date of December 1 until I returned from Pittsburgh, after enjoying the holiday season with Ruth and her family. I, too, remember the incident of your carrying her on your shoulders at one of the reunions. I wonder if she will. I'll make an inquiry for the answer. .Congratulations on your secretaryship - you sure have a real job in gathering information about all the remaining members of Class '98. I'm sure Charlie would be very proud to have the news of Ruth in the column. However, I received a December ALUMNI MAGAZINE and read about the various families, so presume my information will arrive too late for publication. In case you'd like it for a future copy, here goes. I know the account of Ruth's marriage was published in 1946. There have been no more items since that time. She married Edwin J. Titsworth of Providence, R. I. He was Amherst '41. They now live in the borough of Fox Chapel, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pa. He is with Koppers Co. there. They have three children. Carolyn in ninth grade, 13; Edwin Jr., 11 in seven grade, both at Shadyside Academy and Tracy 7. Ruth was Middlebury '42. They are all well and healthy. I lost my dear husband, Mr. Daniell, in '56 but am continuing to live in our home here. I have my friends and choose to be independent. It is wonderful to visit Ruth and family but one does enjoy the peacefulness of one's own home. Hope you and your family are all together. I actually have forgotten whether or not you had children. It is a long, long time since my last reunion with "Monty." It was nice to be thought of and I hope this information will help at some future date.
Recently I received from Ev. Snow the address of Mrs. Hilton W. Long, nee Harriette Patey, daughter of our former esteemed secretary and late beloved classmate, Philip H. Patey, "Tate." My letter to her must have arrived at the time her husband had passed away. Despite the heavy load of sorrow which she bore and in which her father's classmates share, she bravely wrote as follows: "That was the nicest letter you sent! I remember father talking of 'lke' Seelman many times. I was happy for the things you said about my father - even though the letter came at a very sad time for me (see clipping). I cannot take time now to give the family record, but I wanted to let you know I had received your letter. I'll answer it a little later, but there is a mountain of other work I must do first, as I am sure you understand." The clipping from the Boston Herald, Dec. 23, 1961, contained a picture of her late husband and his record as a soldier who served with distinction in both World Wars. He had retired from business. There are two children, Charles and Andrea.
'98 challenges all classes to bring forward one, among all their families, in which every male descendant and in-law was or is in the military service. Such is the record of the family of our honored President, JohnB. C. Eckstorm. Those who were at our 60th will recall his party of nine, including his two daughters who with my two girls and son-in-law made up fourteen of the twenty-six at our class dinner. Mary Mills writes responsively: "Dad was most pleased with the December MAGAZINE. I hope the information will be helpful. I thought you might be interested in my new job." Enclosed was a newspaper clipping containing her picture and headed "Mrs. Mills appointed to post at Foundation. Mrs. Kermit J. Mills of 843 W. Fifth St. has accepted a position with Magnetic Springs Foundation as director of public relations. Among her duties will be to revitalize the women's auxiliaries of the foundation, help in fund raising campaigns, and acquaint the public with the hospital facilities. She will maintain an office at the Foundation." Her career in voluntary hospital assistance is then set forth. Congratulations, Mary, in which our elder daughter, Mrs. Maurice V. Odquist, joins. She is a director of and chairwoman of the Women's Auxiliary of Dobbs Ferry General Hospital, N. Y., and one of its best fund raisers.
