Received good letter from Chuck Maxwell, doubly appreciated because of circumstances under which written. Main item of interest: son John has been accepted under the early admission program for the class ot '6B. Daughter Elizabeth is a junior majoring in English at Mount Holyoke. Chuck's conclusion is quotable: "Elizabeth and I continue to live most contentedly in Manhattan at 113 East 61st Street, since neither of us is, by temperament, a commuter type. We much regret not having been able to make the 30th Reunion. We would have done so had it not been that I came down with an acute attack of an odd ailment called dendritic keratitis - for the layman, ulcers of the cornea - caused by a virus known as herpes simplex. I recovered virtually completely from that attack but as of today I have the ailment in the other eye and am headed for the hospital this afternoon." We hope that Chuck is by now recovered from his unusual ailment.
Don Simpson sent me an item about JimTomlinson, but modestly says nothing about himself. Jim has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of the Abrasive Grain Association for 1964. The association is a trade organization of manufacturers of aluminum oxide and silicon carbide abrasive grain. (I always wondered what the wheels of the gods were made of.) Jim is president and general manager of General Abrasive Co., Inc. of Niagara Falls.
Charles E. Odegaard, prexy of the U. of Washington, has been elected a trustee of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association. As a trustee of TIAA, Chuck will serve on the board of the nonprofit association that provides retirement and insurance plans to the faculty and staff members of colleges and universities, independent schools, and related educational and scientific institutions. Chuck was also elected to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation board of directors.
That long-time banker of the Connecticut valley, Bill Lieson of Springfield, Mass., has been elected a director of Landisen, Inc. of Chicopee Falls, manufacturers of Sterling Television Picture Tubes. The first outside director to be elected to the Landisen board, Bill's initial efforts will consist of management counseling assistance for the expanding firm. Bill is also director of Buxton, Inc. and Mutual Fire Assurance Co. Too bad $20 gold pieces aren't still available for attendance at board meetings, Bill could have quite a collection.
Heard from Bob Fendrich, our treasurer. (To reassure you about the handling of our funds, let me add that Bob is vice president of the Howard Savings Institution of Newark, N. J.) He reports that the payment of dues is at about the usual stage for this time of the fiscal year. (Have you sent in your check?) He sent along a copy of a note that he received from Don Allen. It's so tightly written that my paraphrasing would spoil it, yet it is all quotable. The note follows:
Your letter with the bill for class dues has finally caught up with me here in Bandung, Indonesia. Regular mail takes 2-3 months whereas of these aerogrammes makes it in a bit over a week.
Don't know that I've seen you since we left Hanover Have always been a teacher and had a wonderful experience. Being out here has been perhaps the most interesting jaunt yet All sum- mer we studied Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) at State University of New York College of Os- wego Left New York in late August with stops in L.A. and Honolulu. My roommate, Ben Cowden who lives in the latter, was home in the U. S. while I was out in T.H. We have been trying for years to get together. When he was able to come for a visit our furniture had been moved out so we could rent it, So it seems to go sometimes!
We 3 days in Tokyo, a couple in Hong Kong and a week in Singapore where our younger daughter Barbara attends the American School. She has just come home for Christmas vacation. Had to travel Singapore to Bangkok to Singapore in order to go on to Djakarta. We arrived in Djakarta before Malaysia day. Our older daughter, Pat, graduated from Green Mountain Junior College in June and is out here with us. She is doing volunteer work in the office of the Advent Hospital here.
We will be out here 2 years. Am on a State University of New York project of the Ford Foundation. Will be going home via India Beirut, Athens, and Europe in the summer of 1965.
Will ask my business agent in Albany to send a check for my class dues. Kindest regards.
Boothbrace called to suggest that I ask the class wives to write in with recent news, Items of interest to all of us about family and classmate Joe's recent job change. We all know that our dear social secretaries are frequently more disposed to writing newsy letters than friend husband. I think his suggestion is a good one and I'll be happy to receive any items sent by the distaff side.
Haven't got around to writing to some of you who have not reported in for some time. Have had a mysterious fever for a fewweeks which finally landed me in a hospital (where I've finished these all-too-brief notes). Doctors say it may be bacterial endocarditis, which now can be cured. Write anyway.
