Kudos to Morrison "Red" Tucker for his election as member at large of the Alumni Council.
At this writing, I have not seen the November class notes, nor have I had time to check all recent ALUMNI MAGAZINES and Newsletters. However, in the establishment of this secretariat, I would prefer to repeat rather than omit noteworthy accomplishments of our classmates. So here go a few things you might like to know, even for the second time. - The Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. of Boston promoted Don Richardson of Framingham Centre to home office claims manager from his earlier job as special claims manager and assistant vice president. Our meager records on Don show that he has had continuous service with Liberty Mutual since 1934, except for LL.B. 1939 Fordham and Lt. 1943-46 Navy. Fill us in, Don. - Jim Moore (J. B. Jr. that is) contin- ued his watery avocations (water polo, Navy, yacht racing) by captaining the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club International One-Design Team in a series of races against a Bermuda team. Unfortunately, the MBYCIODT lost. - Marv Chandler, president of Northern Illinois Gas Co., was elected president of the American Gas Association.
Our own Wah-Hoo to Dr. Joe Roberts who was named school physician in Watkins Glen, N. Y. He resigned his 7-year-old place on the Board of Education to take the assignment. He may have to take on the music department if they ever learn of his nimble piano fingers.
The dynamics and diversity of Washington, D. C., were aptly demonstrated when Mike Cardozo and Ed Marks recently assembled a small group for a conversational lunch, including Ben Burch, Dr. Tom Dublin, Joe Fanelli, Carl McGowan, Bob McGuire, Jim Wakelin and your secretary. You may color it politics and label it Washington, but I submit that the city is the focal point for many disciplines - not all tied to politics, or money-making. At the risk of oversimplification, I list the represented interests: an organization of law schools, international development, real estate development, medical research, law practice, the federal court, private business plus significant community participation, naval research, and manpower programs. The obvious omission from the form and fabric of this area, i.e. the legislative branch, was not represented due to the taking of an important vote. Plans were discussed for a class dinner with wives - probably in January.
Related to the above report is the recent Distinguished Service Award to Representative Tom Curtis by the American Political Science Association. This well-deserved tribute was capsuled in an editorial in the (Washington) Evening Star: "Representative Curtis has become perhaps the leading champion of effective floor debate." (Hanover teachers of poli sci and forensics please note.)
We learn by the grapevine that Ben andSally Drew have been having a busy and exciting time. Among their activities have been a graduation at St. Lawrence University, reunion at Hanover, various horticultural meetings, a daughter's marriage in August, and another daughter's entry into the Peace Corps. Ben and Sally hoped-to enjoy a sailing cruise to the Virgin Islands in November. I'm sure Ben will give us an account of their cruise.
Boothbrace called to say that he'd like to get into this thing about having an elected Board of Overseers. But said he didn't know whether to be for or agin, because he hadn't heard enough about it. Can someone fill us in?
Thus ends the first column of your new secretary. Chairman Bo Wentworth couldn't have known, but he caught me at a receptive moment. My principal contribution up to now has been one son to the class of '63. Having become The First of a long line of two, I suppose I should be ready to undertake a bigger job. It might better suit my spotty style to range more widely with words than to maintain the class chronicle, but I'll do the best I can. I can't help but say that I hope this column will have some appreciable degree of success. The best measure would be an improvement in '32's Alumni Fund participation. A lesser, albeit important, yardstick would be the number of different names mentioned with newsy comments. In any event, you must furnish the basic material. Send me your news, and I'll try to (1) spell the names right and (2) avoid an excessive number of cliches and personal opinions, difficult though either may be.
